A broad sweep of astrology and its mythological foundations

While this unusual book seems to drift all over the sky, it is basically coherent and definitely well-written. If you're looking for a book to better understand the underpinnings of astrology, then this book offers insights not found elsewhere. Each zodiac sign is examined in the context of myths from several cultures. The last third of the book is a collection of articles that deal with myth-making, the cycle of year, personal myths in the horoscope, etc. This book is appropriate for newcomers to astrology who will appreciate all the connections drawn between signs and planets and the things of everyday life - like language and calendars.

This Book Is Thin In More Ways Than One

This book delivers little of the promise of the title and I'm quite surprised by the Mountain Astrologer comment above. The book really is about astrology. There is a little bit of Greek and Roman mythology thrown in, but only as it relates to the constellations of the zodiac. If you already knew or thought that Virgo was based on Ceres or Isis then you won't learn a lot here. In short this is a book about astrology for someone new to the subject. It also has a number of glaring errors or, at best, places where the author presents new opinions as accepted fact.
I liked the title, but now feel misled by it.

Great even when not that interested in the Blues

Let me start off by saying that pretty much anything that Richard writes I will like. He is a blogger for the Rochester newspaper where I live, I've read 'Learning to Walk' by him and I just like his writing style. This book is another example of how much I enjoy whatever he writes. I too live in Corn Hill, where Son lived for a period of his life, I've lived here for 22 years and never knew a thing about Son, or him living here. Now I do. While his music is not something I am drawn to, I appreciated reading about his live and what shaped his music. I also like the story of Richard meeting Son and how his music related to his own life.

For me, it was a brief but intriguing literary work that shared much in common with novels where it is the "searcher" who is eventually revealed in the search. A wonderful read in which you are caught up in the intersections between a city that loves music, a man who breathes it and the enigma of Son House.

I really enjoyed this short read. Never knew anything about Son and I have lived in Rochester all my life. Rich's last book, " Learning to Walk" was excellent also. I am waiting for Book 2 of the Trilogy. Rich has a wonderful way with words.

I was born in Atlanta I eat in Atlanta everyday. I go to the restaurants he has high-lighted in his cookbook and I order what he orders!
I haven't received my cookbook but I have seen it from friends that sought it out!
The only thing I can complain about is CASEY"S DOG located in Winder Georgia will be packed from now on,
I have been eating at this whole in the wall for years. It has won award after award but never published nationally, their BBQ, soups, stews, Chili and THE BURGER thats in the book are so good I haven't had a hotdog there yet!!!

Inadequate treatment of the topic. Some good photographs, though small-format, A very short book, in a flight-magazine style, designed for tourist or souvenir purposes. Interesting but very limited selection (10) of teas discussed (briefly). More oriented to China tourist kitsch. Execrable though sometimes unintentionally funny English.

About the Author
Salma Hage, a Lebanese housewife from Mazarat Tiffah (Apple Hamlet) in the mountains of the Kadisha Valley in north Lebanon, has over 50 years experience of family cooking. Really enjoying this book!

Love, love, love this cookbook, Want to try all of the recipes. Enjoyed the personal stories of her life and learned a lot about MidEastern spices and how they are used. Already tried the Quinoa Tabbouleh and the Falafel which were excellent. She includes pictures so you can see what your dish is supposed to resemble.
Learning to combine fruit both dried and fresh into recipes that I never would have thought of. Yesterday I had the Minted Cucumber salad and added pomegranate seeds and pine nuts--really, really good.
I ordered another Middle Eastern Cookbook, The New Persian Kitchen which I would rate just OK. I will probably donate it to the library. This book had lots of meat recipes which are OK and you can substitute legumes, but not enough pictures so it was hard to visualize the dishes. As a newbie to Middle Eastern food I needed more of an explanation with pictures to make me curious to try the food.

About the Author
Dieter Sevin, a native of Germany, was Professor of German at Vanderbilt University. He received grants from organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, American Council of Learned Societies, German Academic Exchange Service, and the Vanderbilt Research Council.

Ingrid Sevin, a native of Germany, has been teaching German and French at the high school and college level in the United States and in Germany for more than ten years. From 1987 to 2002, she was the editor of the German audio-magazine SCHAU INS LAND.

This concise text offers an introduction to discrete mathematics for undergraduate students in computer science and mathematics. Chapters 0–3 cover fundamental operations involving sets and the principle of mathematical induction, and standard combinatorial topics: basic counting principles, permutations, combinations, the inclusion-exclusion principle, generating functions, recurrence relations, and an introduction to the analysis of algorithms. Applications are emphasized wherever possible and more than 200 exercises at the ends of these chapters help students test their grasp of the material.
Chapters 4 and 5 survey graphs and digraphs, including their connectedness properties, applications of graph coloring, and more, with stress on applications to coding and other related problems. Two important problems in network optimization ― the minimal spanning tree problem and the shortest distance problem ― are covered in the last two chapters. A very brief nontechnical exposition of the theory of computational complexity and NP-completeness is outlined in the appendix.

Excellent introduction to Discrete Mathematics

I was misled by the low price thinking this would be a bad book. But I was Mathematics. The reason for which I bought this text book is because it has many proofs and in particular it includes the proofs of a couple of theorems I had been looking for. The presentation is formal but clear. The author includes plenty of excercises and answers are provided for odd numbered ones. So far I haven't found errors or typos. The book has enough material to be used in a two semester course sequence. I would give it a relations, total and partial orders, logic, combinatorics, regular languages, graphs, number theory, algorithm analysis and even NP-completeness. This book should be useful for both Math and CS students.

Excellent Text

As with any Dover text, it is important to remember that this text is designed to teach the material, not to coddle the reader. This text provides broad and deep coverage of the various topics that fall under discrete mathematics (set theory, boolean logic, graph theory, etc.) with clarity and simplicity. This book is not designed to help you pass a test, but is instead designed to help you grasp and understand the topic, which it does very well. Easily the best book I own on this topic (I often joke that the author covered my first semester course on discrete math in the first chapter!).

A good supplement, but not a guide for a new learner

This book is full of great examples and loads of practice problems. Its descriptions, for students fairly comfortable with mathematical writing, are concise and no-nonsense, which can be great. It makes a good reference, in that way, but the book doesn't do much to guide your intuition. It's also full of tiny mistakes (seemingly due to rushed editing) that should be no problem for an advanced student or someone working closely with another guide to the subject (a teacher, tutor, or other textbook). But for learners who might struggle with the material, these mistakes in the book can really interrupt understanding. (As a result, I chose not to assign this book to my students.)
