About the Author
Andrew Louth, born in Lincolnshire and brought up in the north of England, studied Theology at the universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. From 1970 to 1985 he was Fellow and Chaplain of Worcester College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Theology, teaching prinipally Patristics. In 1985 he became Reader in History at Goldsmith's College, London. He is the author of The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition (1981), Discerning the Mystery: An Essay on the Nature of Theology (1983) and Denys the Areopagite (1989). He has also edited Early Christian Writings for the Penguin Classics.

Early Christian Writings

Staniforth's is a superb translation of the Apostolic Fathers, the best I have ever come across. It is very readable. Each writing comes with an introdution by the editor detailing its history --- when and where it was written, etc. --- and discussing its main themes. This would make a excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in early Christianity.
The texts included in this volume are 1 Clement; the 7 epistles of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and Polycarp; the epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians; the Martyrdom of Polycarp; the Epistle to Diognetus; the Epistle of Barnabas (despite what one of the previous reviewers says, it's included in this volume); and the Didache.
Conspicuously absent are the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias. Both have usually been considered Apostolic Fathers, and I am a little baffled at their omission.
Other recommended Penguin Classics: "The Jewish War" by Josephus, "The History of the Church" by Eusebius.

A Valuable Link to the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers

Early Christian Writings is an excellent collection of the works of the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers. It is for anyone looking for literature that opens a window into the Post-Apostolic Early Church. The epistles included are The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians; The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and to Polycarp; The Epistles of Polycarp to the Philippians; along with the Epistles to Diognetus and Barnabas. The book also includes the Didache and the martyrdom of Polycarp. For some reason Louth did not include the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias, though he does mention them as being part of Cotelier's collection of writings by the Church Fathers.
If you are interested in the writings of the Church Fathers, and have never read such a collection, you can have some enjoyable and moving reading ahead of you. In reference to his pending martyrdom Ignatius writes, "I am His (God's) wheat, ground fine by the lions' teeth to be made purest bread for Christ" (Romans 4). He also says, "To die in Jesus Christ is better than to be monarch of earth's widest bounds. He who dies for us is all I seek; He who rose again for us is my whole desire" (Romans 6). The Epistle to Diognetus contains a vivid and compelling description of the early Christians. The second half of the Didache is full of interesting guidelines and instructions to the early believers on such things as baptism and fasting. Louth includes some good commentary about the fascinating account of the martyrdom of Polycarp.
The translation by Staniforth is very readable. The introductions by Louth are interesting, helpful, and well written. The notes following each book provide the author's commentary of the passage, assistance on difficult passages, insight into the mindset of the writer, important historical information, and other resources for further study. These early church writings are available on the Internet but I have not found any Internet sources that provide as good a presentation of the writings as Early Christian Writings. The inclusion of The Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias would have made it a more comprehensive collection. Despite this exclusion, for those looking for such a collection, I recommend Early Christian Writings.

Good for laypersons

This collection is a decent collection and translation of the Apostolic Fathers for the general reader. I have two gripes though.

One is that the Shepherd of Hermas is not included. I would imagine this was because of its length, but the collection seems woefully inadequate without it.

The second is that the verse and chapter numbers are not given in a form that makes them the least bit usable when looking up passages that are referenced in other books.

For research purposes, I would recommend the Loeb Classical Library editions or the excellent one volume reworking of the Lightfoot edition available from Baker Books edited by Michael Holmes.

But if you're not out to be the next Jarislav Pelikan or J.N.D. Kelley, then this should do just fine for some interesting and inspiring reading.

Five excellent stories, five talented authors, one outstaning book

This collection of five erotic woman to woman stories is an outstanding anthology that any fan of lesbian erotic fiction should add to his or her collection. There truly is something for everyone with this collection.

The common denominator is sports as all five stories revolve around participants. There's running, swimming and diving, roller derby, yoga and tennis. All five stories have very well written sex scenes where the reader FEELS what characters are feeling, not just a description of what they are doing.

The first story, Marathon Woman by Cheyenne Blue, was my favorite of the five. This is because I am a hopeless romantic at heart and am a sucker for good romance in erotic stories. The love between these two women was deep and the reader can easily feel it as well.

Making an Impression by Lucy Felthouse was a good story as well, but certainly more of the pursuit and capture theme. The dive into the pool to get attention was a nice touch.

On an Ocean of Skin was a nice change of pace in that one of the characters,Olivia, was very unsure about how to act at the advances made toward her. That is not an uncommon theme, but Laila Blake skillfully portrayed this woman.

Derby Girls by Erzabet Bishop was not only a very sexy read, it also does a nice job of showing the reader an insight into the world of Roller Derby.

And finally, a tennis story, Match Point by Harper Bliss. I always love reading her work for the very hot sexual scenes and her very detailed descriptions of the physical traits of her characters. The tennis in this story was pretty good too! ;)

Not only did I get to enjoy another Harper Bliss story, I was introduced to a few other talented authors, all of whom I hope to read in the future.

Read the first story, Marathon Woman by Cheyenne Blue. Not a bad story, but didn't really pull me in either. Making an Impression by Lucy Felthouse is the second story and was a bit more enjoyable, but I didn't get a feel for the characters. On an Ocean of Skin by Laila Blake was a nice story. Not sure what it was about this story but it left me with a smile on my face. I thoroughly enjoyed Derby Girls by Erzabet Bishop! I will be checking out more of her work. I just finished with the final story and it has confirmed what I have said many times before. I love Harper's writing style. I really can't explain it, but I feel much more engaged as if I can see and hear the characters and the setting. Overall this was a good book and all of the stories have merit, but even if the only story in the book was Harper's Match Point this book would be well worth the price!

I am drawn to the thought of love, the anticipation almost as much as; no maybe, quite possibly, slightly more than the actual act of making love. Wow, should have done this review a day or two after I finished reading instead of just after. ((Smiling really hard)) You will enjoy. For me, erotica beats out porn because it is believable and I can relate, and this can easily be seen in how the plots flow. Porn to me at times can be impersonally detached, gross, too direct and fake. Yea, erotica is foreplay, porn is just porn. ((Laughing)). I just happen to want more.

"The Hermetic Kabbalah" shows how the tradition has developed through two millennia to the present day, its ideas intertwining with Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah like the serpents in the Caduceus of Hermes. It includes a detailed exposition on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the ten sefirot, and many other traditional themes including the Partzufim, the Primordial Adam, theurgy, and ascent mysticism. It also describes the Rectification of the Soul, in which the soul is awakened to an understanding of its place in the Cosmos. Profusely illustrated, with over 60 diagrams and illustrations, this book is a distillation of a lifetime of study and practice.

This is the most sophisticated and well-composed presentation of—and commentary on—Hermetic Kabbalah I have ever read. Colin Low is philosophical, even spiritual, yet ever worldly wise. He has an impressive command of the whole cloth, yet he is a keen observer of those day-to-day things that form the threads. Throughout, Low is accessible, even when describing the most arcane aspects of kabbalah and the streams which rush around it. In this, his manner of description and the connections that he draws are highly original, though in a way that leaves one muttering, “Oh, of course.”

THE PARK HOTEL built in 1934 was rumoured to have been Chairman Mao's favourite. It is a landmark in Shanghai and representative of pre-Communist China. For almost fifty years, the Art Deco hotel was the “tallest building in the Far East” —and for many years, the tallest outside of North America. This skyscraper, an architectural expression of modernity and capitalism, was commissioned by bourgeois Chinese businessmen. They hired the Austro-Hungarian architect, Laszlo Hudec (1893–1958), to bridge Western ideas of modernity and the needs of China. Today, in China and abroad, Hudec has become a “star architect” of the pre-Communist period.

About the Author
LENORE HIETKAMP wrote the first version of this study on Laszlo Hudec and the Park Hotel in 1998. The architect's work then began to catch the eye of scholars and architectural enthusiasts around the world. Lenore has given over twenty lectures on Laszlo Hudec, from Victoria, Canada, to Shanghai, China, on subjects ranging from the hotel as pop art to the architect's European roots. She has contributed to a book on Shanghai’s visual culture and written an encyclopedia article on the hotel. Her exhibit on Hudec still hangs on the walls of the Park Hotel. The exhibit opened in 2001 to much fanfare and a large audience that included city officials and current residents of Hudec's buildings. After seven years in a PhD program at the University of Washington, Lenore now works as an editor and specializes in architectural history.
