Great essays in feminism. I advise any modern day feminist to read. It has great ideas that the individual can take in and help to understand the world around them and how women can/have to navigate through them.

Every feminist and every philosopher should read this book

I use "The Politics of Reality" as the primary textbook for my course on philosophical issues in feminism. Frye is extremely lucid and intelligent; beginning students appreciate her useful analogies and well-structured essays, and I still get something new out of the book every time I read it. Her discussions of the difference between oppression and suffering, the purpose of sex-marking (i.e. behavior that informs others of one's sex), coercion, love, why lesbians scare the hell out of some people, and the meaning of anger are among the best I'm aware of, and her analysis of oppression provides a wonderful framework for understanding social realities. One of her themes is the importance of radical imagination; Frye's book itself goes a long way towards helping readers envision a more just world in which women are free, independent subjects, rather than enslaved objects who are shaped to the service of men. Frye is an outstanding philosopher, an excellent writer, and an inspiration to all feminist thinkers, as well as to anyone interested in the liberation of all those who are oppressed. I only wish I'd read her books (check out "Willful Virgin") a few years earlier!

I think what the last reviewer didn't understand is that no men are oppressed on the basis of their maleness, therefore they are not oppressed as men. They can be oppressed by homophobia which sees femininity in a man as a weakness, they can be oppressed by class, race, religion, etc...but not on the basis of being a man.
Oppression happens to individuals, but not individually. People who belong to certain groups can be oppressed as a result of their group membership or perceived group membership, but there is a difference between oppression and suffering.
That said, this book is brilliant and heavily cited in works by other genius thinkers and in my own personal life.

There are similar books out there which deal with metaphysical issues. Not quite religious and not quite spiritual - rather a nice blend of both. I will treasure this and re-read it often.

Very helpful!

I recently graduated from college with my Bachelor's in Jazz & Contemporary Music last year (Oct 2008) and I can tell the study guide will help me tremendously. Especially the history section. My college focused more on jazz/rock/pop artists in history and this books starts from Gregorian chant to music of today. There's a lot of information in this study guide!! I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to become certified to teach music. Or to just become more familiar with music all-around.

Studying music is more than playing instruments

When some of my family members heard I was going to study music, they thought I would just learn how to play a variety of musical instruments. While I did learn quite a few, there was a lot more to it than that. I had to learn about music history and literature, theory and many more categories. The problem with all that was that I had to take a big test at the end and I wasn't sure how I was going to remember it all. Since I had plenty of time before the exam, I decided to take my time and pace myself with my studying. The problem was that I still didn't want to waste time. When I found this guide, I was thrilled to get a comprehensive review that really helped me line up my study sessions. The first time I sat down, I could look at the history and literature section and the next time, music theory. The way the guide broke things up really helped me separate the information in my mind and remember it under the right category. Another great part of the guide was the fact that it gave me some practice tests so after I studied hard, I could see how I was doing. I took the test several times to make sure I was progressing. It was nice to see what types of questions might be on the real test as well.

Great customer service! Loads of information!

I originally purchased a number of books to study for the Praxis II in music, this book being one of them. It was several months before I opened the book to study it (had other exams to get through first), and ended up purchasing the product again by mistake! The company was prompt and courteous in refunding me. The book itself, I have found extremely helpful and informative. There is a tremendous amount of information in it, so read each answer carefully. The only thing this source is missing, is the listening component: There is no CD compiled of music that may be found on the Praxis II test, or suggestions of sources where that could be found. So I have been trying to fill in that gap. The MENC website is also a wealth of information, and well worth joining (whether you are a music teacher or not). You can get practical and timely advice on everything concerning music education, so it's worth having access to for your Praxis exam as well. I have not purchased the flashcards that are available. Although I have not taken the exam yet, it has helped!

If someone who owns these books were asked how much they would sell these for, the answer would most likely be, "THEY ARE NOT FOR SELL!" About the Author

J. Fred Weston, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus Recalled of Managerial Economics and Finance at the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. Since 1968, he has been Director of the UCLA Research Program on Takeovers and Restructuring.

Samuel C. Weaver, Ph.D., is associate professor of finance at Lehigh University, where he formerly served as the Theodore A. Lauer Adjunct Professor of Finance. He is a veteran of over 100 acquisition valuations and numerous other restructuring activities.

Make Sure You Have a Solid Accounting Background

Unless you have a firm understanding of accounting terms and practices, this book may not be the best reading material. It is, however, very detailed with great information regarding the strategies needed when considering a merger.

Uninteresting

J. Fred Watson is infinitely knowledgeable about the subject of M&A, but his writing style has to be the most boring uninteresting bunch of words thrown together I've ever read. One of the biggest weaknesses of the M&A class I am taking is his textbook. I have an on-line copy of ed. 4 and an ed. 3 hardback, beside the illustration being the most bland I've ever seen in my 36 years, he fails to highlight or make bold keywords, points and references in the book. The books themselves fail to be a tools for teaching as opposed to research papers. Furthermore rarely do you find any of the answers listed plainly in the text. The questions at the end of the chapter might ask you question that you have to go outside of the text for the answer. The assumption is you already have a background in Finance and Accounting.

Anyone who has to read any of the above mentioned works should be ready for frustrating borefest with terrible hard to understand charts and some of the worst explained examples of how to work the analysis portion of the mergers that I've ever seen in any book.
