This is a british text, so it takes a couple of chapters to get used to the different spelling of some words. BUT, it is a really great read with a lot of different examples than U.S. texts.

It's hard to imagine now, but when The Love Boat premiered in 1977, it was considered so sexually suggestive that Princess Cruises almost didn't allow the show to film on its ships because they were afraid it would give people the wrong image. Yet, in the long run, Garin points out, the series proved to be a critical factor in repositioning ocean cruises as an attractive luxury for middle-class consumers. Just a few years ago, Princess and three competitors accounted for almost 90 percent of the cruise industry's $13 billion annual revenues; when Princess began merger talks with Royal Caribbean, rival firm Carnival swooped in, made the deal themselves and wound up controlling more than half the market. Carnival's founder, the late Ted Arison, provides this lively industry history with one of its most engrossing narrative threads, from the running aground of his original flagship's maiden voyage to his emergence as one of the world's wealthiest individuals. But Garin's as interested in the ships themselves as he is in the boardrooms, and he turns up disturbing stories of corrupt labor practices and cover-ups of sexual assaults of passengers by crew members. It also jumpstarted Carnival Corporation, which controls more than half of today’s cruise ship market and constitutes this book’s primary subject. Garin, an investigative journalist, dives into the history of the industry, exploring the depths of the business and exposing (unfortunately, to a lesser degree) the grueling work of those who serve these flagship fantasies. Fitting its raucous subject, Garin's history of Miami's cruise ships is not your father's business book. Garin offers wry observations on the industry and the fantasy it offers the 10 million Americans who annually embark for a bacchanalia on the high seas. Should they weary of calypso rhythms and boozy assignations, they could pick up this book and laugh along with Garin while he explains the complex industry that languidly sails the Caribbean. Two companies, Carnival Cruises and the Royal Caribbean, now dominate an industry that was nonexistent in the mid-1960s. Garin discusses passenger shipping at the time, which had an overhang of aging ocean liners idled by the jet age, one of which Carnival founder Ted Arison bought. Others followed suit, and everyone learned to make money in the laissez-faire environment of international shipping. Fueled in part by the TV show The Love Boat, the popularity of cruises exploded, inspiring the construction of today's party boats and drawing the attention of governments to buccaneers of the business. An even treatment with a fascinating storyline...

Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.

The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...

Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...

Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. One of the all-time best business case studies

I cannot say enough about the strong points of this book. Garin would have earned much praise for simply recounting the history of Carnival's extraordinarily rapid conquest of the global cruise industry -- earning founder Ted Arison at his death the title of 'world's richest Jew' and leaving son Micky at the helm of a company that took just over 25 years from its 1971 birth to reach annual profits of $1 billion. Beyond Garin's entertaining story of how the Arisons created both an industry and a fortune, there is so much more to this book: it's a wonderful social history of American vacationing and travel rituals and preferences; a tale of entrerpreneurial takeovers and strategizing every bit as intriguing as 'Barbarians at the Gate'; an investigation of corporate corner-cutting in the labor, environmental, tax, and other regulatory fields as eye-opening as 'Silent Spring'; WildWest-style episodes of mutinous crews and commando-led cruise-ship rescue operations; marketing coups and blunders; the impact of TV's 'LoveBoat' series; along with Caribbean cultural and economic lore from Bob Marley to CARICOM (the island nations' version of the EU). This massive reporting effort is wonderfully well-organized and unfailingly pleasurable to read.

Cruise Book

As the owner of a travel agency, I found this book fascinating. It gives a great history of the 2 major cruise lines, Carnival & Royal Caribbean, and the history of their rivalry over the years. I am not sure that this book is for the everyday cruiser, but if you are involved with the cruise industry I would consider it a must read.

Dominant & His Dominatrix

In Jennifer Probst's latest Steele Brother book, Dare Me, she has written Rafe Steele's story about a dominant male who wants to be dominated by a woman in the bedroom. This is a secret he's been keeping from his ultra dominant brothers. He embarks on Madam Eve's services to fulfill his ultimate fantasy of submission. Enter Summer Preston, an innocent looking woman who wants to be a Dominatrix. I enjoyed that these characters were strong and not afraid of going after what they wanted in and out of the bedroom. I liked that Rafe still showed dominant tendencies even when he was submitting to Summer and made the sex scenes hotter. Now, it's up to Rafe to accept the ultimate dare of losing his heart and submitting his body for all time. This was a surprising twist from the previous two Steele Brother books yet I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Very Short read. Appx 40 pages long. Basically a one night stand turning into a passionate true love, resulting in Marriage. Storyline: they meet, they have sex all night, they live happily ever after. I got it on my Kindel, so was really surprised it ended so quickly. I really like Jennifer Probst books so that is why I got the whole series, which are about the main characters two brothers. So it is basically 3 different books, approximately 40 pages long each with same storyline.

A decadent dare to be different between a man who can’t admit he wants to submit and a woman whose dominant tendencies are hidden behind wholesome image.

Rafe Steele is a decorated war hero who has lead men into hostile territory and brought them back because of his ability to take charge. His strong dominant show just about every aspect of his life except one. He desires to yield control in the bedroom, but it’s something he can’t bring himself to admit to his brothers. Unknowingly they convince him to set up a perfect night through a private matchmaking agency. He thought one night of experimentation would be enough. But when he meets a vixen under angel’s clothing who makes him want more, can he get past his worries and take her dare for more?

Summer’s daytime job as an elementary school teach fulfills her need to nurture young minds. But her need for a man who’s secure and brave to appreciate and connect with her regardless of her dominatrix tendencies isn’t quite so easy to find. Unable to form bonds with the men she’s seen, she looks to Fanta-C to set her up. She never expect a blind one night stand would lead her to Rafe Steele, a man who fulfilled her in every way she craved. But can she convince him to go for more?

The role reversal is not typical and I found it to be a nice change of pace. I loved how Rafe and Summer fought for control in the bedroom and found Rafe’s turmoil between his manly man demeanor and his desire to submit interesting. So the reason for my rating is that for some reason I couldn’t fully connect with either main characters and also felt it could have been steamier.

I’ve read several of Jennifer Probst’s books and I always enjoy how she writes very likeable characters and an interesting story with a good amount of sexiness and romance. Dare Me is no exception.
Dare Me is novella #3 in Steele Brothers series by Jennifer Probst. Told from both point of view and a happy ending. It can be read as a standalone.

About the Author

David Leaper qualified from Leeds Medical School in 1970, before training in general surgery. He has the Fellowship in Surgery of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh (1974), England (1975) and Glasgow (1999) and gained the CCST in 1980. He has two higher degrees by thesis; MD (1979) and ChM (1982) and was awarded the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons in 1998. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Bristol (1981-1995) with Honorary Consultant status at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Southmead Hospital in Bristol. He was Professor of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong (1988-1990) and at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1995-2004), and is now Emeritus Professor, with Visiting Chair status, at Cardiff University, where he works in the Wound Healing Research Unit. He has published over 10 books, 50 chapters and 200 original research and review papers. Iain Whitaker read medicine at Trinity Hall College, University of Cambridge, where he also obtained the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Arts. He completed his sub internship in plastic surgery at Harvard Medical School, USA, followed by his surgical house officer post at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. After serving as an anatomy demonstrator at the University of Cambridge, he completed his general surgery training in the Yorkshire School of Surgery, and subsequently became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. During his specialist training he has spent time overseas in both clinical and research activities in Uppsala (Sweden), Louisville and Connecticut (USA). Iain has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters and books and has won academic awards from Cambridge University, the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and Commercial Bodies.

The Pre-Test series is a great resource to hit high yield facts and concepts that will be tested on during medical school class exams and, especially, on the NBME style Shelf Exams. After using this book, answering all the questions, and annotating First Aid with any exceptional tid-bits, I scored high on BOTH behavioral science exams/shelf as well as psychiatry clerkship/exams/shelf. This is the BEST book to get second year med school because it covers both behavioral science and psychiatry!

Great resource for the psych shelf

I found this book to be very helpful for the psych clerkship shelf...as much as it frustrates me when co-med students explain "what works best" and "what you should do because it worked for me," I will say that the questions in this book are much easier than those in the real shelf. However, they go over almost everything you need to know for the shelf itself. I did not use any other resource.
