Grade 7 Up–Scott Hudson begins his freshman year of high school as a source of income to Wesley, the school shakedown artist. The girl he's known since kindergarten has blossomed into a goddess, but doesn't seem to know he's alive. He gets roped into writing the sports column for the school newspaper, even though he's not an athlete. On top of everything else, his mom is pregnant. As Scott maneuvers through a number of serious situations—bullying, a suicidal classmate, school dances—he still manages to be upbeat and true to himself. Overloaded with extracurricular activities and honors homework, he begins a journal filled with lists and tips for his expected sibling on how to survive freshman year. As the school year and his mom's pregnancy progress, Scott begins to find his niche at school in David Lubar's laugh-out-loud novel (Dutton, 2005). The main narration is more than capably done by Ryan MacConnell as Scott. The rest of the characters are voiced by a variety of actors, adding depth to Scott's experiences. Unobtrusive music throughout enhances the recording, including a lullaby whenever Scott writes in his journal for the baby. Along the way, he discovers that his mother is pregnant, and he writes a series of insightful letters to his soon-to-be sibling. By the end, Scott has outgrown his freshman insecurities, realizing that he has carved a place for himself in the high-school world. The story delivers too many messages as Scott learns one important lesson after another. Still, most readers will find plenty of amusing, accurate observations about freshman life, from the insecurities of first dates to the dangers of walking the hall between classes. Todd Morning

Funny & Relatable according to my freshman son

My son had to read this for English I in high school. He's a freshman and said he totally related to the book. Very funny and he relatable. My 15 year old son enjoyed the book so much he asked me to buy the second book. He likes to read but very rarely does he enjoy books that he "has" to read for school. I'd say that's a plus!!

I read this book because it is on my son's summer reading list. The main character is an intelligent and witty boy with a love of books. While writing a survival guide for his unborn sibling, he cleverly incorporates his English lessons to tell the story of his freshman year. The book addresses bullies, homework, a suicide attempt, friends going in different directions, and making new friends. Overall, it was very good and enjoyable to read.

I bought this book for my nephew as it was required summer reading. Now this is a child that would rather do ANYTHING other than read. He finished this entire book in less than 24 hours. He LOVED it. I actually had to pry it out of his hands so he would go to sleep.

When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent". French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special.

Yet the French children Druckerman knows sleep through the night at two or three months old while those of her American friends take a year or more. French kids eat well-rounded meals that are more likely to include braised leeks than chicken nuggets. And while her American friends spend their visits resolving spats between their kids, her French friends sip coffee while the kids play.

Motherhood itself is a whole different experience in France. There's no role model, as there is in America, for the harried new mom with no life of her own. French mothers assume that even good parents aren't at the constant service of their children and that there's no need to feel guilty about this. They have an easy, calm authority with their kids that Druckerman can only envy.

Of course, French parenting wouldn't be worth talking about if it produced robotic, joyless children. In fact, French kids are just as boisterous, curious, and creative as Americans. They're just far better behaved and more in command of themselves. While some American toddlers are getting Mandarin tutors and preliteracy training, French kids are - by design - toddling around and discovering the world at their own pace.

With a notebook stashed in her diaper bag, Druckerman, a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal, sets out to learn the secrets to raising a society of good little sleepers, gourmet eaters, and reasonably relaxed parents. She discovers that French parents are extremely strict about some things and strikingly permissive about others. And she realizes that to be a different kind of parent, you don't just need a different parenting philosophy. You need a very different view of what a child actually is.

While finding her own firm non, Druckerman discovers that children - including her own - are capable of feats she'd never imagined.

Controversial? Possibly. But still worth reading and here's why...

As is the case with many books comparing American parenting styles with that of other countries, some potential readers have felt opinionated - even defensive - before even buying the book.While I certainly haven't concluded that French parenting is "right" and American parenting is "wrong", this intriguing book deserves a fair chance - one obtained by reading it - but some initial "reviews" were written by people who simply refused to read a book comparing American and French parenting techniques.

So what will will you find in Bringing Up Bebe? What makes this one worth a look?

To start with, the author, Pamela Druckerman, does not come off as someone who is crazy about France, let alone French parenting - at first. As she writes early on, "I'm not even sure I like living here" although she does change her tune later. She came to her opinions about French parenting slowly and she backs up her main points with plenty of research studies as well as techniques she learned from French parents and parenting authorities. As a result she concludes that "the French have managed to be involved without becoming obsessive. " They aren't waiting on their kids hand and foot and they don't assume that they have to push their children to succeed. Even so, she notes that she hadn't thought she was supposed to admire French parenting. So consider her a reluctant convert to French methods of parenting.

Druckerman observes that there doesn't appear to be a relentless drive to get babies and children to various lessons or such activities as early swimming lessons. A neighbor was content to let her children simply find ways to play, often with old toys or perhaps by exploring her outdoor environment.

Meals are also handled differently with set times for eating and with children being expected to exert enough self-control to wait hours in between meals. Vegetables, varied types of cheese, and other foods American kids might snub are not only served but actually eaten.

Then there are the studies. They are certainly food for thought and perhaps some spirited debate. One study notes that mothers in Columbus, Ohio find child care twice as unpleasant as mothers in Rennes, France. There is the University of Texas study that concludes that French mothers aren't concerned with accelerating their children's cognitive development or academic achievement. Instead, they are comfortable with letting their kids simply be children while they still can. The author cites another study which indicates that 90 percent of fifteen-year-olds eat their main meal with their parents - compared to 67 percent of those in the United States.

The author took detailed notes as she observed French parents. She learns that they expect their babies to start sleeping through the night within no more than a few months - or even in the first month. They ask Druckerman if her baby is "doing her nights" (sleeping through the night).

Admittedly, a certain number don't...but a fair number do because their parents use "the Pause" , not responding immediately to a baby's cries. When Druckerman tries using "the Pause" her own baby starts sleeping through the night, although...to be fair...she does wait until her baby is more than a few months old, unlike the French parents she describes.

Even infant mortality rates are lower in France, 57 percent lower than in America. There is an emphasis on a calm pregnancy and not eating too much. This doesn't mean starving but an overly obese mother isn't necessarily serving a baby's health. I won't stress this point too much because there could be many other factors that determine the possible difference in infant mortality rates between one country and another.

To sum it up, the author has discovered the "wisdom" of French parenting and has written a book that seems to be aimed at imparting that wisdom to American readers. Druckerman also seems to be encouraging parents to try and change the way American parents perceive children,to not base their lives so much around the kids. To be clear, the parenting advice here is centered on children, not teenagers, as French teenagers are given more freedom but in Druckerman's view also seem to have less cause to rebel.

I did have some issues with this book. The first chapter has far too much info about Druckermans' career before moving to France as well as her time meeting and dating her husband-to-be. This takes up an entire chapter. I wanted to get to the parenting observations more quickly. The book consists mostly of personal observations and Druckerman's parenting experiences which are also peppered with interviews with such people as the French "Doctor Spock" as well as other experts. I'm sure it will be controversial and from what I've seen and read it already is. Even so, this book deserves to be judged based on its contents.

A must read for parents, especially in the US. My highlights: "Babies aren't helpless blobs, they can learn... they do best when given clear boundaries and freedom within them...must teach children patience, impulse control and delayed gratification...there is no such thing as kid food, offer them everything!"

A must! If current American child rearing doesn't seem to be working for you!

Very inspirational! I knew there had to be a better way to raise a child and this was it for me! This book teaches so many valuable parenting skills, I am using it as an instruction manual although it is not so much in instruction-manual format as it is story format. She gives a brief intro to each value, then goes into stories and examples of what she had experienced or seen.
It teaches how we don't need to give up our whole lives as parents to be GREAT parents, that we can go out to eat and actually ENJOY the meal together, knowing the difference between teachable moments, listening moments, allowing small acts of naughtiness, and just plain unnecessary micromanaging (!!), and so much more!
Going to also purchase her "Bebe Day By Day" and look for cook books that specifically emphasize the French values of introducing foods to your children. I NEVER made separate meals for my daughter, always had her eating what we did (and at 3 she eats tons of fresh veggies and fruits), but this book is inspiring me to find more interesting ways to do it :)

A Must Read For Tweens And Teens

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD

The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

Inspiring story. Great for grades 3-6.

Wonderful, informative read. It was fully accessible to my 3rd-grader as a read-aloud, and we were thrilled to be reading it when the announcement came that she'd won this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The text is clear and engaging, and the photos are beautiful and informative, too. I've heard a few brief interviews with Malala, and her voice comes through loud and clear in the text. Both mother and son came away with a new appreciation for struggles others face in the world.

Story of a lives lost to addiction

This book is the story of a young man with a life filled with opportunity. Instead of taking advantage of what was in front of him, he chooses the path of drug and alcohol addiction. Anthony, the main character of the true story, is also the co-author of the book. He includes many sections detailing his life of addiction and crime in his own voice. His wife also includes her thoughts about what was happening to her husband and her family. She admits to living in denial during much of their early years of marriage.

There are many lessons to be learned from Anthony's story including the power and powerlessness of family support. Anthony's family tries to help only to have him lie to them again and again. Getting him into rehab only serves him for short period of times before he relapses. In the end, while sitting in a Federal prison for robbing an armored truck, his family support is what keeps him hoping for better.

There are surprising twists and turns in the book. Just when you think Anthony is ready to make a change for the positive, he does something unexpected and continues his life of crime.This is co-author Dane Batty's second book. The writing, as in the first book, is exciting and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. The five star rating goes to the writing.

The writing is so good that I found myself forgetting that the book is a true story of drugs, alcohol, crime and a dysfunctional family unit. Hopefully the readers will remember there are real people behind all the words.

Fascinating story of crime and multiple drug addiction

I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good this tale of addiction, crime, punishment, and (possible) rehabilitation turned out to be. I had read co-author Dane Batty's previous venture into the true crime genre ("Wanted: Gentleman Bank Robber" 2010) and it was good. This one is even better.

Author Anthony Curcio himself is the subject so this is as much a memoir as it is a true crime saga. Curcio is that kind of attractive and athletic golden boy who is good at just about everything he puts his mind to, the kind of guy who from childhood gets away with way too much just because people tend to like him and forgive his transgressions. Unfortunately he has one fatal flaw, addiction. He managed to addict himself to pain pills, alcohol, cocaine, and adrenaline rushes while ingesting a wide variety of other pharmaceuticals. At one point he was spending $350 a day on drugs or over $127,000 a year.

His personality is manic-depressive. When he's flying he can do anything; when he's down he is suicidal. And of course the drugs only made things massively worse.

The central event in the book is the Brinks armored car robbery that took place in Monroe, Washington in 2008. Curcio got away with something like $400,000. It was a painstaking-planned heist with several original touches that caught the media's attention.

Curcio put an ad in Craig's list and got over a dozen guys to dress as he would be dressed in blue landscaper's outfits. They were instructed to show up in the parking lot near the bank just before the Brinks truck would arrive thereby providing cover for Curcio's get away--which, by the way was via a nearby stream on an inner tube. You may have seen a reenactment of this crime in a recently broadcasted segment on TV's 20/20. The segment is probably archived at their web site. I saw it. It's worth viewing.

But what this book is really about is Curcio's spiral from high school heart throb and star athlete (and class clown) to the very depths of depravity as he desperately scrounges, lies, cheats, schemes and steals to support a massive drug habit, the likes of which I have never read about before. Batty interviewed Curcio in prison. He also interviewed his wife Emily. Every page screams authenticity. The prose just runs under your eyes as you quickly turn the pages. I read the book in a single day.

Some observations: At one point Curcio totally identified himself as a criminal citing the criminality of bankers and others in power. Part of this was just a rationalization that allowed him to commit crimes without guilt. But part of it is what millions of people genuinely feel: they have been cheated, lied to and stolen from. For some there's the sense that it's all a jungle and the tiger does not feel it is wrong to eat the lamb.

The material on being in prison was strikingly vivid as Curcio depicted the mentality of the prisoners and their guards and the various hells he went through. The authenticity reminded me of Jimmy A. Lerner's excellent "You Got Nothing Coming: Notes from a Prison Fish" (2002). In some ways Curcio's account is even better. You won't want to miss knowing what it's like to spend weeks in a tiny cell with a crazed white supremacist as hundreds of cockroaches crawl all over your body.

As in many true crime tales we have the ever-suffering, ever-na�ve, ever in denial wife. Her name is Emily and she and Curcio were sweethearts from the eighth grade. He had shown such promise and she loved him so much... Yet she is heroic in the way she works to hold her family together at all costs. Near the end she learns of Curcio's many infidelities and demands that he come clean and tell her the truth. It is a bit strange that these infidelities (which, incidentally, are NOT written about in the book) was what hurt her the most. Not the stealing, the neglect, the shame, the fear--no it was his unfaithfulness. In her demand that he confess all we see a power struggle between husband and wife. In the final analysis he apparently does confess all and I would say she won.

And maybe her amazing ability to stay with Curcio and her ability to forgive him will in the long run be rewarded. Curcio got out of prison in 2013 and there is the hope that he can conquer the bipolar demons that haunt him without spiraling back into drug addiction. He is a talented man and although a criminal, he is not the kind of criminal that wants to hurt people. He is a flawed human being who may yet use his talent in socially responsible ways.

True Crime Meets Addiction Story

Anthony Curcio pulled off a nearly perfect bank (truck) robbery. But that's only a part of the story.

Anthony had everything: athletic ability, a great upbringing, a high school sweetheart, two beautiful little girls... but prescription pain killers meant more to him than any of it. Vicodin and Crack took over his life, leading him to more and more illegal activities to support his $15,000 a month habit. One of his semi-legal activities was flipping houses. But then the market crashed.

That's when he conceived of robbing the bank truck. Ostensibly to "save his family," but really, it was all about supporting his drug habit and penchant for high-end consumer goods.

When he was caught, he still didn't understand how addicted he was. Only after years in prison did he come to realize what addiction had done to his life and what was really a priority.

Yes, you'll probably read this book for the True Crime aspect. But you should pay attention to the life that led to this terrible, stupid decision. Addiction destroys life, and this book shows how that process happens.
