Nicely targeted to the second-time architect.

My context: I helped build a system with a Rails "middle end" that talked to about eight microservices, and then moved that from Heroku to AWS. So I'm not a novice, but I still have a lot to learn. This book is nicely targeted at people like me. In fact, throughout I was thinking "I'll use this as a checklist next time I'm building a system" and then I was pleased to discover that the final, summary chapter is essentially that checklist.

My only negative comments are these:
* The writing up until chapter 4 seemed somewhat dry, then picked up its pace and became more conversational. However, the earlier chapters' topics are important (and used throughout the book), so don't skip them.
* There's some jargon in the text that's unexplained. Most of it I already knew or could puzzle out, but I'm still curious what a "full-fat virtual machine" is. A glossary would have been nice.
* There are a good number of useful references (with and without URLs) that I hope to check out someday. That would be easier if there were a comprehensive list of references at the end.

Note: I'm not a fan of code- or diagram-heavy technical books on reading devices, but if I were doing it again, I'd buy the kindle version.

Excellent introduction to microservices

This book is an amagelmation of the best practices for build large, scalable system. Topics range from: design patterns, API design, continus integration, continus delivery, testing, automation, virtualized environment and containers, monitor, security, database and CAP theorem.

All of the concepts are covered (not the implementations). When more details are required, the author recommends other (well known) books for references. As for software/tools, a few interesting ones are recommened, and it is up to the reader to investigate more details - Understandable as the software landscape changes rapidly.

Recommended reading for architect, engineer and DevOps!

Misleading Title

I found the title misleading... This is not a book about some new architectural concept or in-depth analysis regarding latest trends in Web Services. The book is an enumeration of good architectural practices with little value for the hands-on professional. (Little value not because they should be ignored, but because hands-on professional already masters them!) Very readable, with a good flow, the book covers high level concepts like: avoid tied couple components, event base systems, synchronous vs. asynchronous... and later goes on to common software practices such as: versioning, logging, deployment, continuous code integration, authentication and authorization... I see the book as a good material for a student starting in this field or managers trying to grasp these concepts. But I can only infer this was not the intended targeted audience.

On Grief and Grace

When I lost my baby in the 1980's no one was talking about the grief of this kind of loss. People said the most uncaring insensitive things - I'd have another one, God needed another angel, and all sorts of ridiculous things. This book has sound theology, and explains what BIBLICAL teachings are about the soul of a baby. Further, it explores a concept many Christians seem to misunderstand - GRACE. In addition to miscarriages and still births, this book addresses abortion. Parents who have lost a baby to an abortion deal with the loss, and the guilt of their decision as well. This is a wonderful book about both the grief and the grace of God and His love for all of us. Most of all, it gives parents who have suffered the loss of a baby hope that they will, indeed, hold their child in heaven.

This book gives Roman art an identity of its own.

Ms. Kleiner does indeed show how eclectic Roman sculpture is/was. But she also shows and explains how artists wrought texture out of stone, their flare for facial features, the thoughtful tilt of the head or the significance of a raised eyebrow. There is more to Romans than conquest. This book makes that clear. This book also does an excellent job of relating historical events to tastes in sculpture.

Good, but not over the top

THis book is part of what I have to read in my introduction course in greek/roman art. In this respect it is maby not optimal, the autor focuses too much on works of art that no longer excicsts, and works that aren't that well known. I wish she would focus more on the really famous pieces. What is realle good is that it follows the Emperors cronologically, and that makes it easier too understand the connecton between art and society. For people with special interests in the field, it is probably wonderfull, but with 460 pages it is long and a bit too much information for a new student.

Jean Hunnisett has a lifetime's experience of professional costume making, including work for the Old Vic, Sadlers Wells, Royal Opera and Ballet, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, the English National Opera, Washington Ballet, Houston Opera, Zurich Ballet, Australian Ballet and as Principle Cutter for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She has worked for BBC Television on over fifty shows: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Elizabeth R', 'Emma', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Ivanhoe', 'Vanity Fare', 'Dr. Who', nine productions of the BBC Shakespeare Series, nine of the BBC Operas, etc. Jean also worked for commercial television companies, on shows such as: 'Edward the VII', 'Ghosts', 'Pygmalion' for Annette Crosby, and Twiggy among others. Her film credits include: 'The Slipper and the Rose', 'Joseph Andrews', 'The Corn is Green', 'For Your Eyes Only' and many more. For productions in London's West End theatre, she has made costume for such artists as Joan Collins, Dame Wendy Hiller, Joan Plowright and Dorothy Tutin. It would take pages to list the theatre, ballet and opera productions she has worked on. Another side of her work was to make parts of costumes for museums such as the Museum of London and Kensington Palace, enabling them to show incomplete treasures. Jean also made costumes for Madam Tussaud's at Warwick Castle and at Windsor Station. She inaugurated and taught period costume cutting at the London College of Fashion and extensively lectured at home and abroad. Her career has put her side by side with a host of famous personalities. Not as solid as its predecessor...

This volume of Period Costume for Stage and Screen covers the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the book is much less useful than the one that came out before it. While there are still a variety of patterns there is not nearly as much guidance on how to put them together, correct fabrics and looks, and similar detail. I have, however, used it in conjunction with my copy of Patterns of Fashion to iron out some of the more difficult concepts in that second book. Over all I still recommend it for a completionist's library, but would not recommend it to the beginning sewer at all.

Excellent source of garment construction of the 19th century

Although I am not using this book for stage nor screen, but for a series of dolls clothed in 19th century fashion, it is an invaluable source of information on dress style, design and basic pattern construction for the garments I am making. A good basic understanding of garment construction and dress making would be helpful - this book is not for the beginner dress maker. The book is well laid-out, clear and precise. I own numerous books on fashion of the period, including antique fashion books and this one pulls it all together. Excellent!

Jean Hunnisett's books are my favorite! She has so much knowledge to share that you just can't find anywhere else, I wrote an extensive review on her other book, 1600-1800, which I used extensively. I have yet to actually use this book, but have read through it and I have a few projects planned. Highly recommended!

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally. It's not made for drinking. It can give you headaches for a months to years and is a mutagen, which means it should be handled like a carcinogen.

great pediatrics book

I thought this was one of the most complete pediatrics books out there. I had my pediatrics rotation before internal medicine, so I wanted a book that had complete information, especially about critical care management, etc. I used Blueprints and Case Files and thought this NMS book was the most helpful for the shelf. I used the new 2009 version.

The book is very indepth and takes time to read BUT I made a 99% on the Peds shelf exam using this book +case files. I did this for General surgery as well and made the same score

best Peds review book

This covered minutae without perseverating on one topic for too long. There were little facts that I read that came up on exam questions or on wards that only I knew because others were reading First Aid. I was able to read through whatever chapters were being covered each week on the Peds clerkship without it being overwhelming and I made it through the entire book. I read the parts I highlighted a couple days before Step 2 and I was set.
