About the Author
Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. He co-authored his first textbook on using Excel as a statistical tool. Today, Mr. Carey has authored or co-authored more than 20 leading academic and trade texts for the software industry.

Ms. Carol DesJardins spent 25 years in the private sector as a programmer, systems analyst and eventually Chief Information Officer. During that time, she honed her skills with Excel as an analysis tool. She transitioned her knowledge to the classroom and has taught several applications and programming courses. Ms. DesJardins co-authored her first textbook on Excel. In addition to writing, she continues to teach at St. Clair County Community College.

I'm so glad Mark didn't leave his stupid comments in his pocket

Greg Sestero has done something fantastic. He's managed to perfectly pinpoint all of Tommy Wiseau's eccentricities and show us exactly why we should care about him. Our dear Sestosterone is not only talented at growing beards and playing football, he's also a great and engaging writer. As a longtime fan of The Room, I really enjoyed the way Greg switched between talking about his early years with Tommy and the actual drama happening on the set of The Room. Each anecdote is better than the last.

I think as fans we sometimes forget that these characters we see onscreen (and yell insults to on countless midnight screenings) are portrayed by actual human beings, separate from their characters. I loved reading about how Juliette Daniels ended up playing Lisa and Dan Janjigian's preparation for the Oscar-worthy role of Chris-R. The Disaster Artist has brought an entirely new dimension to The Room. The book's biggest feat was helping the reader understand Tommy Wiseau, as much as anyone can understand Tommy Wiseau. Some of the details that Greg shares with us break my heart. I now view Tommy in the same way one would view a vampire puppy-- with an equal mixture of "aw" and "eek".

I can be sure that the next midnight screening I attend, I'll be giggling to myself over how long it took to shoot the famous, "I did naaht heet her" line. Or over the real reason why Peter was blinking so much. Or whether the enigmatic Chloe knows what obscenities audiences yell when they see her name appear onscreen. Without this book I would never have known that I've memorized The Room better than Tommy Wiseau. It was a fantastic read and I'm so excited to see what Greg Sestero does next!

A funny book about a ticking bomb of a movie

We do not lack for books about the making of movies. The movies under discussion can be very good (Aljean Harmetz's ROUND UP THE USUAL SUSPECTS, about Casablanca) or very bad (Steven Bach's FINAL CUT, about Heaven's Gate) or even merely disappointing (Lillian Ross's PICTURE, about The Red Badge of Courage). Such books aren't funny, except in the sense of occasional comic relief. But THE DISASTER ARTIST is as different in its approach as the subject it follows, a self-made emigre and would-be *auteur* named Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, produced, directed and starred in his own vehicle, THE ROOM. Not only has Wiseau's movie little in common with the product of standard Hollywood journeyman, it's surprisingly difficult to type, or even rate: for example, Amazon reviewers give the movie 4.4 stars out of five, while imdB reviewers, amateurs also, give it a mere 3.5 -- out of ten.

Greg Sestero was cast as the good-looking interloper in what is supposed to be a romantic melodrama but veers off course so often that it provokes laughter and groans as much as true appreciation. He is also co-author of this warts-and-all account along with Tom Bissell. For my money, the real humor in this book comes not so much as the added sarcasm ("beardosaurus") as the satires of circumstance that follow Tommy Wiseau, a firm believer in the American dream that with enough drive and ample money, success is bound to follow. Never mind talent or experience. The irony -- and coda to the fun of following the unbridled Wiseau around -- is what happens to the movie, which by all accounts should have been a six-million-Dollar flopperoo. I can heartily endorse THE DISASTER ARTIST, but shy away from giving it the full five stars because Sestero (perhaps aided by his co-author) puts himself front and center a little too much.

Weirdness, Hilarity and Humanity

The intriguing true story about the making of the worst movie ever made, but even more, a kind and humane explanation of the weirdo who made it. Greg Sestero used a co-writer to tell his story but he narrates the book by himself. He's not the best narrator--you'd think an actor would have more precise diction--but his mimicking of Tommy Wiseau's unique speech patterns, pronunciations and provincialisms from who knows where are hilarious--and believe it or not, affectionate, as is his relationship with this weirdest-of-all-directors/producers/screenwriters/savants Tommy Wiseau. If you're ever able to catch a screening of The Room attended by Greg Sestero and/or Tommy Wiseau, GO. The insights from Sestero's working with, and living with, and being friends with Wiseau will make viewing The Room all the more hilarious and touching.

Despite its fevered title, this is a courtly, ruminative life's accounting by the TV miniseries star and 1960s heartthrob. It relates Chamberlain's journey toward self-awareness and growoing capacity for love, through the scrim of an actor's career. Although the author, who's now 69, discusses his main television, movie and stage efforts, he dishes no dirt about his colleagues or directors. Raymond Massey, Chamberlain's Dr. Kildare co-star, was like a second father to him. The Thorn Birds' co-star Barbara Stanwyck was prepared down to her gestures when she hit the set. The Three Musketeers's bombshell Raquel Welch was beloved by all. As Chamberlain revisits his acting credits, he concentrates on what he gained from them as an artist, such as how he fought for the lead in Shogun or broke through the constraints of Rex Harrison's performance to carve his own characterization of Henry Higgins in a stage revival of My Fair Lady. Throughout, he centers his account on how he evolved as a spiritual being. He writes of his spiritual counselors, who showed him how to gain strength through dissociation and open his heart to forgive and love others, particularly his alcoholic father. He speaks intermittently about his homosexuality, but considers it a nonissue, rather than a political passion. His pantheistic theology is heartfelt, but might seem unfounded to orthodox believers. Healing a damaged soul

I've never been a fan of Richard Chamberlain the actor. I never questioned his talent, but he plied his trade most successfully in "Shogun" and "The Thornbirds," TV mini-series that didn't interest me, and in lame-brained big-screen blockbusters like "The Towering Inferno" which interested me less. Therefore, I was suprised at how much I enjoyed his well-written memoir, "Shattered Love." The dramatic title does not refer, as I initially thought, to a romantic relationship gone wrong, but to Chamberlain's belief that we are all splinters - pieces, rather than products - of a loving God. I'm not sure I accept that theory but Chamberlain is obviously sincere in his philisophical and spiritual beliefs, and they have no doubt helped heal his damaged soul.
Part of that damage resulted from his long repressed homosexuality, but though Chamberlain's "coming out" was used to promote the book, it is but one piece of the whole, just as he regards his sexual orientation as just a piece, and a mundane one at that, of his entire being. This is not a lurid confessional but a heartfelt account of Chamberlain's search for truth and self-acceptance based on the quality and content of his soul rather than the size of his fame and popularity.
Of course, Chamberlain takes time to reflect on his acting career, but avoids back-biting and gossip, finding only kind words for co-stars like Raquel Welch whom he and the other cast members of 1974's "The Three Musketeers" were predisposed to dislike but found adorable, and Barbara Stanwyck, whose professionalism impressed him when they co-starred in "The Thornbirds." But when he turns his attention to show-biz, Chamberlain mainly focuses on how he learned his craft, and how his inhibitions and insecurity were hurdles he had to jump before he could excel at his art.
"Shattered Love" is an inspiring and worthwhile read, even if, like me, you were never really a fan of the actor who wrote it. By the final chapter, you may be one.

Shattered Love moving Toward Love

Richard Chamberlain tells in this book of his poignant struggles of growing up in an alcoholic home, dealing with fame (and when it deals with him), as well as his spiritual search to live an authentic and truthful life.
Many, I imagine will pick up this book with an eye for sensationalism and gossip over the revelation of his sexual preference. Yet they will be sorely disappointed that there is neither sensational and illicit tales, nor gossip to titillate. No, what the reader will find here is a book about a very thoughtful and spiritual man, who happened to act for a living, trying to navigate his way toward love and finding his true and openhearted self.
Though, given the sometimes glossed over and fast-forwarded events in his life that take place in the book, one can't help but wonder if there is another book in the offing or if much was edited out of this one. Yet the spiritual and philosophical ponderings were delightful to read and filled the heart. I am glad that Mr. Chamberlain wrote it and allowed himself to be so vulnerable and open.
On a personal note, I applaud Mr. Chamberlain's courage to write the truths revealed in the book but also wish to add that it makes no difference to me one way or another and it shouldn't to anyone who reads this book. He simply is what he is and approval is not required when reading. Acceptance however, is a bridge to understanding.
You could learn a lot about not only Richard Chamberlain in this book, but yourself as well.

To live in peace with God and mortal being

When Amazon.com recommended to me Richard Chamberlain's book Shattered Love: A Memoir it didn't attract my attention, first and foremost because I thought it was a book about famous people and fame, stuff that doesn't interest me. But to base my decision on something I read the customers' review. Some of the reviewers got me to believe that it is a book about what the life have to offer, if one wants to create and steers his own life, rather than gossip and stories of famous people; a book about the pain that follows and are all around one who cannot be himself in his daily life. In other words, a book about being a thoughtful human being.
Richard Chamberlain's book is well organized and in more than one way remarkable. Hopefully it will help those who walk in his shoes to benefit from his footprints. Because English is not my mother tongue I neither can nor think it's right of me to criticize the text, but can say that I find comfortable to read the book. Fortunately, it isn't a book about fame, so they who want to hear gossip should read another book. It's a book for those who respect the life and want to get acquainted with the nature and voluntarily open their heart for the unknown.
The book reflects itself in following sentence: "It's interesting that some of us are born with, or acquire along the way, a dark sea of inner doubt and insecurity that keeps us adrift, continually swimming to catch up"... The book's strength is the author's decision to accentuate on humanity. Over the years he have thought a lot of spiritual matters; in what way he can developed his mind and thought; including the love, which is naturally quite the same feeling either people are gay or straight. Finally he has found his way to live the life alive and now he shares his life experience with his readers. I fell in love with his description of the love; how he compares it to grammar; love as a noun and love as a verb. With his own words: "Love, the noun, isn't primarily something you do, it's something you are, a state of being. When you open to this level of love, you radiate love in all directions simply because that's what you are. Personal love is more a verb, an activity, a choice, something you do. Divine love has no object, it just is. Personal love is an emotion directed from you to a particular someone else or something else. Divine love shines freely like the sun on everything. Personal love tends to be selective and highly conditional." There is nothing more to say; it's wonderful description, almost poetical. His nature descriptions show that he appreciates and have an eye for the beauty in the unknown or the not well known. Sometimes I missed detailed descriptions, especially if I didn't recognized the place or circumstances. But as a person who lives in North-Europe I smiled to myself when I saw how extraordinary he thinks the bright summer nights in Finland. These long days (or short nights) are as natural as anything can be for us who live in this part of the world, but they astonish those who live far away, and that always amuses me. As a feminist I noticed especially in what way he talks about women, and can say that he deserves many points for see them as a human being, but not as a pretty things. He also deserves points for see animals as a living creatures with feelings.
It's always a sheer pleasure to read a book by thoughtful human being, but it's sad to read a book by man who the public opinion (or is it the media opinion?) puts in the circumstances to deny part of himself. Being gay and act straight man is as much normal as being straight and act gay man; something that seems to me is fashionable in the United States nowadays. Please, try to understand for once and for all that to divide people into gay and straight and make as if that tells us anything is absurd! And by the way, it's ridiculous and in contravention of common sense to talk about "to admit" homosexuality. Homosexuality is not a crime. Gay people should never have been put in the situations to explain (or spell out) their sexuality rather than straight people. Homosexuality and heterosexuality are both part of the nature's spectrum, whether or not people face up to it or close their eyes before it. Other thing is that gay people have to live their life in a straight world. Many of them have to pretend they are something else than they are, and without doubt, too many have a phobia against themselves, like Chamberlain once - it happens to famous and unknown, intelligent and unintelligent people. Because of that, it always pleases me when people, gay and straight, respect themselves and the life enough to say: Being gay is non-issue. One sunny day it will be non-issue, hopefully!
At last, because I have recently read the book The Man who was Dorian Gray, and also because Richard Chamberlain once acted in England, I must say, that, in his early years, he would have been fantastic as Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's excellent novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Is is enough reasons to congratulate the author with a beautiful book about things that matters to us all most.

Thud combat in technicolor!

I'm slowly savoring the literature of the F-105 Thunderchief; the ultra-lead slead: the "Thud." The F-105 was a remarkable aircraft in so many ways; it was a technological masterpiece, the apex of late 50s supersonic aircraft design. Everything about it was cutting edge; from its flight computers, to its airframe (which actually changed significantly over the short lifespan of the aircraft, due to new knowledge about supersonic flight). It was designed for a very specific, very short-duration nuclear deterrent role in europe, and used in almost the exact opposite way. The Thud was designed to supersonically deliver a single nuclear weapon to tactical targets in a rapidly changing european theater of war; there was no plan for, say, long term maintainance. In Vietnam, it was used to deliver multiple conventional weapons in a precision manner on heavily defended strategic targets; day, after day. It wasn't very good at it. The analogy I like to draw is that was like using a high end Caddilac with a bazooka duct taped to its nose to fight against Soviet tanks. As such, it was the bloodiest machine since the B-17 in WW-2. If you pulled F-105 duty over Vietnam, your chances of survival were about 50/50. As such, the stories of the tough, moustached men who relentlessly fought in these machines fascinates me.

Colonel Don Henry's novel is a (probably heavily) fictionalized version of his experiences in the war. It contains many of the touchstones of the actual men and machines; right down to Roscoe the dog at the 388th wing in Korat. The feeling and atmospherics are what really makes this book sing. Many of the other memoires tell similar stories, but the fact that he was allowed fictional license really added color to the story of Thud pilots. From the humid teeming jungle; to the brutal heat, idling on the runway, breathing the exhaust fumes of a squadron of Thuds; to the brilliant scene when the flight of Thuds emerges from a thunderstorm: there is vivid descriptive beauty and color in his tale. It is a story of fire, gore, wind and women; and he evokes them all in palpable ways. Some of the images were so powerful, I suspect they will stay with me for many, many years. There is also great emotional intensity between the two novel's protagonists. It is one of those great archetypical stories, of guru and young buck, and the passing of the warrior badge to the new generation of chevaliers.

I'll be honest, some of the things which happen in the novel are pretty unbelievable, and even cheesy. Knowing how life operates, these are probably closest to being actual fact. For example, the various "love stories" came off as sort of contrived and overly old fashioned to my modern Berkeley sensibilities. The thing is, when I talk to people who were in that war, like, say, my dad, that's more or less how things were. As such, it's more likely an encapsulation of something real; reminding us of the way romance was in more innocent eras.

If you want to read an actual memoire, read something else. If you want to experience the color and ardor of a man's time as a Thud driver in Vietnam, this is the book.

A fast-paced account of the Right Stuff

Thunderchief is a novel about the making of a fighter pilot. The story follows the trials of Lt. Ashe Wilcox, a rookie Air Force pilot flying the Republic F-105 fighter-bomber in combat missions over Vietnam. The author, himself a decorated veteran combat pilot, provides a gripping story the gamut of physical and psychological stresses associated with war in the air. There are harrowing missions, evasion, losses, doubt, self-examination, exhilaration, comedy, irony, sadness and valor; in other words, everything one might expect from a well-written war memoir. That this particular work is a novel should not deter those interested in military history, nor those interested in the psychology of warfare and warriors. The story reads like an authentic chronicle in all respects, and I doubt you will be disappointed with its scope and message.

Thunderchief starts fast and escalates from there. Don Henry hits the target with this narrative; I hope there are more fighter pilot tales to come from this author!

Great Novel From A Great Pilot And Patriot

In "Thunderchief" former USAF fighter pilot Don Henry chronicles the molding of a young fighter pilot, First Lieutenant Ashe Wilcox, into a mature warrior and leader flying the mighty F-105 from Takhli RTAFB, Thailand in the awful year of 1966. Ashe (who reminds me of real-life hero Karl Richter, a close personal friend of Henry) is mentored by a somewhat spooky former POW who only answers to the name "Hunter," and is a full-blooded American Indian, which makes the title of the book into not only a description, but a clever play on words.

I read the book straight through in one sitting, and enjoyed it immensely. Although fiction, many elements of fiction only serve to obscure specific people: there is no doubt that this book feels definitely authentic, and far better than most war fiction. I found the characters and situations encountered compelling and intriguing, and found the account of the aerial actions highly readable.

I only have a few quibbles with the book, all of which pale in comparison to the outstanding qualities the book has. I found the "Indian" references occasionally heavy-handed and pushing the limit of being believable. Clearly the Hunter character is central to the story, but some of his personality traits and behaviors seem like contrived plot points rather than natural and realistic characteristics of a true warrior and fighter pilot. I found the conclusion to be predictable, even though it was well written: the foreshadowing was unmistakable since the first time the subject of Hunter's obsession with the Doumer bridge was brought up very early in the story. Having said that, the character of Hunter serves as a model for Ashe and in that role is very effective. I especially found the Epilogue to be an ingenious method of revealing an intriguing conclusion: Henry clearly crafted the last two pages very carefully, and he got them exactly right.

Although I have to admit that I would have preferred a similar book of historical nonfiction from Henry (the Broughton and Rasimus books are my favorite books on war ever written, perhaps my favorites of all time) this is an excellent and exciting book, and I recommend it without reservations.

Rawia, in Arabic, means storyteller. And that is what I am. I tell the stories of my life's journey, culture, and family through my cooking. A delicious meal is the greatest companion to the memories we cherish most. I was born into a food-loving Palestinian-Arab family in Nazareth, a beautiful town in the southern Galilee. Though the words “organic,” “locavore,” and “sustainable” were unknown then, my parents' approach qualified on all counts. My respect for the sources of food, how it is grown and prepared, originates in my early years at home.

My grandmother had ceramic urns filled with fruity olive oil, pressed from the trees on her family's land picked by my aunts and uncles. My mother, too, made her own olive oil, and used the remaining “crude” oil to make soap; she also distilled her own vinegar, sun-dried her own herbs and fruits, made fresh batches of goat cheese, as well as sweet wine from our vineyards, and jarred jewel-colored jams from the bounty of the local orchards.

After moving to New York, I opened my restaurant Tanoreen to honor my mother and her imaginative cooking as well as the rich Middle Eastern gastronomic culture that is rarely experienced outside the region. Tanoreen is unique because it showcases Middle Eastern home cooking as I experienced it growing up. The 135 recipes in this book celebrate tradition and embrace change. I cook without rigidly following recipes, though I do respect tradition. My dishes are based on our culture's recipes that are flexible enough to accommodate both adventurous and conservative contemporary palates.

Organized by Breakfasts, Mezze, Salads, Soups and Stews, Main Courses (including vegetarian, fish, chicken, lamb and beef), Sides, Pickles and Sauces, and Desserts, in each chapter I maintain the authenticity of a dish, re-creating it as it has been made for generations; but sometimes I might opt to experiment a bit, to make the recipe more contemporary, perhaps adding a spice or offering a few shortcuts. My favorite examples of these are my preparation of Brussels Sprouts with Panko (and tahini), Spice Rubbed Braised Lamb Shank (marinated in ginger and rose buds), Tanoreen Kafta Roll, (a reconstructed classic) or Eggplant Napoleon (baba ghanouge layered between crisp eggplant and topped with basil and tomatoes). A dish like Egyptian Rice with Lamb and Pine Nuts shows this cookbook goes beyond Nazareth, and is more of a bible of Middle Eastern food, sharing my culinary journey from Nazareth to New York, with many stops in between.

Bishara's cooking combines Middle Eastern techniques with Mediterranean flavors. But she takes cues from other cuisines, too. An eggplant napoleon is an ode to its principal ingredient, as well as an inspired marriage of textures: layers of feathery fried eggplant rest daintily between smears of baba ghanoush. For example, her recipe for Musakhan, a complicated festival dish of sumac-rubbed roast chicken served on rounds of fresh-baked taboon bread, is transformed from weekend project to weeknight meal with a simple pizza-like flatbread recipe and smart substitutions like quick saut�ed boneless chicken breast. I know it sounds over the top to say a recipe was life-changing, but Eggs with Za'atar? Life-changing. You see, I often find eggs totally unappetizing yet force myself to eat them because they give me energy. Choking down eggs is not fun and I've really been struggling with breakfast lately. But as soon as I tasted these eggs, I wanted seconds. I think about them all the time! The recipe is basically eggs in a basket topped with savory za'atar and tangy sumac—so simple yet so flavorful. Eggs with Za'atar captures what I like most about the cookbook: the easy ways that everyday, home-cooked ingredients can be transformed with a sprinkle of herbs, spices, and Middle Eastern condiments. Roasted cauliflower is dressed up with tahini and pomegranate molasses. Saut�ed kale gets an aromatic hit of coriander and cumin. Boiled beets become exciting with pesto and fresh herbs. Za'atar, sumac, pomegranate molasses—these are things I already had in my pantry and it was fun to discover new ways to use them. With its focus on home cooking, the scope of this book goes much deeper than typical Middle Eastern restaurant fare in the US. I really appreciated Bishara's approach, which is not 'rigidly authentic' but rather defined by 'creative flourishes.' The recipes in her book honor tradition while keeping things fresh. As a result Olives, Lemons & Za'atar may be useful to a range of cooks who are more or less familiar with Middle Eastern cuisine, looking for classics as well as new inspiration. I've been to Tanoreen just once, but Olives, Lemons and Za'atar makes me want to run right back. In all honesty, it's worth buying this book just for the chapter on breakfast. Could there be any more perfect way to start the day than eggs with za'atar, the addictive Middle Eastern blend of wild thyme, oregano, sesame seeds and tart sumac? Maybe tahini yogurt with cumin-spiced chickpeas and flatbread, also in the chapter, tops it. And then there's the mezze chapter with its flurry of dips, savory breads and a pickly things. What I love about Bishara's approach is that it's not at all dogmatic—she's a joyful and intuitive cook. For example, she shares her mother's recipe for a hummus without tahini, which could seem like downright blasphemy to some, but to her, it's a nice lighter, brighter alternative. Every time I go to Tanoreen, my vegetarianism flies out the window. My favorite item on the menu is the lamb-stuffed baby squash. The dish is elaborately flavored—the yogurt is sour, the spices sweet, the lamb gamy and the squash earthy. ...it’s a book filled with recipes that feel both modern and traditional, an elevated but still accessible take on a rural cuisine. Rawia does not treat her family’s cooking style rigidly, but rather lets it grow and evolve based on inspiration from her travels throughout Europe and her years in New York. Many of the resulting recipes are loaded with summer produce, which feels a little bit like torture right now, but is also filling me with inspiration for what to do with all those eggplants and peppers we’ll have come August. Rawia Bishara’s new cookbook, Olives, Lemons & Za’atar, keeps the family in mind. Legumes like chickpeas and lentils get plenty of play, useful for building meatless suppers. Lamb, chicken and fish are presented in both traditional and innovative forms. Beautiful but ran into some problems with the recipes

I'm familiar with food from this region and was really excited about trying out some of her recipes. The cookbook is beautiful. Unfortunately, I found problems with some of the recipes I tried. I *have* to think that this is something to do with the editing and not the real recipes because in some cases, the instructions just seem wrong.

Examples
(1) The recipe for split pea soup (shorabit bazzela, page 89) says to add **15 cups of water** when the soup only contains 2 cups of dried split peas (and only 1/2 tsp salt). Even if you add 10 cups of water, you'll end up with a really watery, bland soup - not the slightly thickened soup shown in the picture. I had to reduce the liquid A LOT and add more salt to make it look and taste right.

(2) Beet salad (salatet shamandar, page 69) was too oily even with half the oil added and the instructions, which say "toss to coat", will not reproduce the beautiful salad in the picture.

(3) Rice and vermicelli pilaf (page 182) says to use 1 lb of vermicelli. I used 12 oz and it was too much. There is also no way that 1 lb vermicelli, 4 cups rice, and 9 cups water will fit in a "medium pot". I had to switch over to the biggest pot I have.

(4) Okra with tomatoes (bamya belzait, page 180) came out ok except I added half the lemon juice and half the oil but that's just personal taste, I suppose.

(5) The hummus recipe (page 36) was good but I did add less garlic and lemon juice which is just a personal taste thing.

I regularly use other people's recipes without a problem but I had to struggle with the ones in this book. If you follow the instructions exactly, you will run into some issues. I highly recommend checking it out from the library first, if you are thinking of buying it.

Tanoreen Forever!

Full disclosure - I have been a loyal customer of Rawia's incredible Tanoreen restaurant since the old days when it occupied a tiny storefront. It remains a favorite of my friends and family and "must" for any visit with us. It defined the "Brooklyn" brand long before the hipsters got hold of it.

When Rawia shared with us that a cookbook was in the works, I was very excited. And the fruit of her labors does not disappoint. The book is as beautiful and warm as the woman and I cannot wait to start cooking and experimenting. Somehow, I doubt that my versions will move those at my table to the stunned silence that overtakes guests at Tanoreen, but I will give it my best.

Some things worth noting: while the recipes look well-written and fairly precise, options are given for cooks with limited access to some of the specialty ingredients and suggestions are given for playing with the flavors. (I like books that understand the limitations of a home kitchen). Wonderful tips pepper the book throughout, along with personal stories and memories that give great color to the book and make it very readable.

So far, I made the scrambled eggs with halloumi, to great success. I'll never be the great chef that Rawia is, but no matter where life takes me, I love that I have a piece of Tanoreen to take with me.

Good but restaurant-sized proportions

There are some really good recipies here, the Arabic bread, the feta salad, the hummus, for example. But often the recipe amounts are huge, particularily for the desserts. The flower-scented custard...requires a cup of cornstarch and a teaspoon of mastic (I have never used more than a couple of grains of mastic, which is very bitter when used to excess). Even the bread requires 6 cups of flour, and you wind up making bread all day. If you have a small family and don't entertain a lot, be prepared to scale down the amounts A LOT!
