About the Author
THOMAS SOWELL graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. degree in economics from Harvard University, received an M.A. in economics from Columbia University, and a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago. He has taught economics at Howard University, Cornel, Brandeis, and UCLA. Since 1980 he has been a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he holds a fellowship named after Rose and Milton Friedman. He is also the author of several books, including Basic Economics and his recent Economic Facts and Fallacies.

A bit of overlap

Perhaps it's because I've read so many of Dr. Sowell's books and columns, but I'm beginning to see a lot overlap in what he writes.

1. He has talked about the role of navigable rivers in economic development several times before-- not least in his "Migrations and Culture" book among other places (columns).

2. The notion that the amount of "dead capital" that is sitting in places like Haiti and other third world countries that cannot be erected because of poorly functioning legal systems is not new either. This is something that was covered at great length in William Easterly's book "Misadventures in the Tropics" and (I believe) in "Wealth and Poverty of Nations" (David Landes). Both of them are great books. Of course, Dr. Sowell writes about them in an interesting and easy-to-understand way, but the book feels very much like a secondary source since I know exactly where these arguments come from

3. A lot of the data on differences in income between different ethnic groups was trotted out from older works (but updated), so one gets a strong sense of deja vu when reading this.

Overall, it's a good and very readable work. It is worth reading for people who never bother to fill in their ideas with specific case studies or case examples of what *actually happened* under certain circumstances.

His discussion of health care economics was also very interesting and made the whole book worth its purchase price. So, on the strength of that alone, I recommend the book.

A must-read for every voter!

Once again, Sowell clearly explains everyday economic concepts with a series of interesting real-life examples from around the world and throughout history. The focus of the book is not only to explain sound economic concepts but also to explain why it is often in the personal interest of the political class to act contrary to these principles. The negative effects of their actions are often not felt until they are long out of office and few are likely to trace these effects back to their original cause. In the short term, doing the wrong thing gets them elected or re-elected.

Every voter should read this to inoculate themselves from the lies of our politicians. The book is non-partisan, exposing the political thinking of both US parties, as well as many others in other countries.

If you don't think you are interested in economics, you should be, because it affects the life of every man, woman and child on the planet. This book makes what can be a dry subject interesting. It's hard to put down!

Too many students speak of free college education, relief from student loans, and many social justice gobbledygook without understanding what they are talking about. too many people, both young and old but primarily leftists seem to have missed what their parents taught them that "money doesn't grow on trees!" (Unless their parents believed that and taught them that).

Will teach forward/backward extensions and flat/minor keys.

This is one of my favorite series. The first book helped me learn to read music. This second book is beginning to show me forward and backward extensions and flat/minor keys. I feel the lessons are presented with clear instructions, although not a lot of instructions ( I prefer more). Each new skill will be followed by several very short practice songs to play. The end of the book has a long Spotlight part with several long pieces to play, all very nice. Little parts on Theory and History are added through the book, a nice touch. It does not come with a CD to listen to the songs but you can stream the music or get a free CD with the order form included. I feel you will need song books to practice the skills you learn. I use several other books with this one to actually play music.

Pros and Cons

Overall, this is a great book. It's the second in a series of teach-yourself books for string instruments that is well laid out and rather easy to understand. The lessons don't move so fast that you feel lost and, in fact, the book does a great job with mini "review" sections that allow you to reinforce what you've already learned to keep it fresh in your memory. The CD does a great job working with the book. No tracks are lost or skipped over and it follows the book quite well.

CONS:
Each one of these books in the series comes with a CD. I feel it's necessary for any book that claims it is a "teach yourself" music book to have a recording because, after all, we're talking about music. That is, sound. There's no amount of text that will do a better job at conveying a message of sound better than the sound itself.
That said, they did a horrible injustice by including a CD that has only 72 recorded lesson tracks on it. The book has 210 lessons. If you want the rest, you pay extra for it buy getting a CD that's sold separately. I think that is ridiculous. I know they're just paying the bills, but this is a bit too underhanded. The CD should reflect the book. Nothing more, but nothing less.
What's worse is that book one in this series has a complete CD (as well as a DVD!) with all the lessons - mirroring the book. This gave me a sense of false security when I purchased the second book.

The recordings themselves are OK, I guess. They claim they use a "professional orchestra." Listening to it, they could've just used a couple synthesizers and saved themselves a boat-load of money on what I'm sure were just a bunch of union-scale-paid musicians. The recordings sometimes use downright silly sound effects in the pieces to "jazz it up" or something to that thinking. It's almost embarrassing at times. However, I just plowed through it because I'm more focused on the cello. That is, I was focused on it until I got to lesson 73. Now I'm back online looking for the rest of the damn tracks!

Three stars, because I'm in a good mood.

Rather miffed about the missing lessons on the CD, I contacted the publishing company directly. They said they don't have the rest on a CD because they actually didn't record them. When I asked why they stated it was because they felt that the audio CD would "become a crutch" for the student. I have no idea what that means. As one who's been in music for years, it appears to be some dismissive thought process on learning music and one that I can't agree with. Regardless, they don't exist. I would suggest trying out other book/CD packages for more exercises and examples in addition to what Essential Elements has offered here.
