Great studying aid!

I have purchased this book upon careful consideration as I thought I had a good collection of books ranging from Andrew Loomis to Robert Beverley Hale and Bridgman to carry me through my time as an art student interested in academic constructive figure drawing. So it was a revelation to learn that there is a book that showcases the teaching methods used in the Russian Academy of Arts. As the book is in Russian, the publisher has kindly provided an English PDF that you can either purchase on its own or receive for free upon buying the book which I found very helpful to read.

In short the book is a fantastic aid to your understanding of constructive figure drawing and would be well used both in conjunction with life drawing sessions and on its own copying from it. It is a hard cover printed in large format with great attention to detail. There are plenty of examples illustrating various landmarks found in old masters' work in both sculpture and painting. The process of drawing both the 3/4 portrait and the full figure is laid out in a simple and accessible manner (provided you're either fluent in Russian or have a copy of the PDF). Needless to say this book alone will not improve your drawing, no book can on its own, you have to work at your craft and and constantly apply what you learn from it. It stands very comfortably shoulder to shoulder with some of the best books out there and I am so glad I took the plunge!

I have also bought another book by the same publisher (4art) called Drawing Samples for Copying which showcases a collection of some of the best works by past students of the Russian Academy between 18th-19th centuries. It is a quality teaching aid that one can use to study good academic drawings. The large format is great for seeing overall drawing but where this book strikes gold is the subsequent spreads following each drawing with various blown-up detailed shots of the same image, giving you access to specific areas to study and observe the technique used. I really can not recommend it enough!

One thing to also highlight is the first rate service I have received from 4art. I was a little worried at first seeing as I was ordering from the UK, but the sales department was always at hand, very quick to answer any questions with informed, friendly emails. Dont take my word for it, try emailing them yourself, they were absolutely second to none in terms of their sales and customer service department!

I recommend this for serious art studying

Brief, well illustrated with tables, images with anatomical casts, sketches, drawings by old masters, this manual offers the system of academic drawing and illustrates the stages of work.

Art professor Vladimir Mogilevtsev, brings 15 years of experience in training students in the light of the traditions of Russian classical school, and on practical tasks, stage by stage, conveys the essence - the basis of drawing - in a simple and understandable form. This makes it possible not only to understand and explore the modern academic requirements for academic drawing, but also sets the right framework for self-study.

Succinct, gorgeous drawings, unique

With so many books on anatomy and how to draw and so few on constructive anatomy which actually teaches you to understand what you are seeing, such as Bridgman, this book is invaluable and a great addition to any serious student. It represents the basics of academic drawing taught by the only remnant school of the 20-21th century to teach classical art as it has been taught for 400 years.

It's shorter than I expected but there isn't a single page wasted here, it's very didactic and objective. From a students perspective it's perfect. I'm sure he (the author) gets it a lot but I must say his drawings and teaching methods (which I was told aren't his but just the academic method as is taught by the school) are one of a kind. I'm very happy with it and I'm looking forward to his other books due to be released soon.

The only complaints I have are the lack of the cover image in a bigger format inside the book, and the fact that some of the images on bones and muscles are lit in such a way that you can't really see some muscles and bones clearly enough, but there are other books out there for that purpose.

Content includes step by step process of a portrait and figure drawing from conception to finish, with detailed information and tips by the teacher on each part, eyes, nose, mouth, etc, a database of classical images representing each part so you can study how the masters did it, and a few awe inspiring 18th-19th century academic drawings of the Russian academy to exemplify or just make you drool. The book is in Russian but if you purchase it you can get a free PDF version of it in the English language by requesting it on the Russian site 4-art.org. Just e-mail them.

Letters of the Dragon

From this book, I learned that reading someone's correspondence provides insights into that person's life that might not be as available through biographies, or even autobiographies. These letters were intended as intimate and private expressions from the heart, to be transmitted to family members and close friends. They were not formal and highly edited manuscripts prepared for a large unknown audience. They helped me to understand this man.

I found the following especially interesting.

He loved his wife and children very much. He repeatedly mentioned them in his letters.

He had no animosity towards the Japanese. He loved Japanese food, found samurai movies entertaining, delved in the Japanese martial arts, and enjoyed his visit to Japan.

He stopped in Hawaii (that's where I'm from!) on his way to San Francisco. And he wrote about plans to honeymoon in Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii, with his wife, Linda.

His agent tried to connect him to the Hawaii 5-O television series. p. 103

He gave encouragement to other pioneering Asian martial artists (e.g., Jhoon Ree) in their missions to establish themselves in the United States. In a letter to Ree, Lee expressed this familiar coping strategy, "Remember my friend that it is not what happens that counts, but how you react to them." p. 117

He tried to make his television character, Kato, more of an "active partner" of the Green Hornet, and less of a "mute follower." p. 77

Generally, this collection describes the development of a human being who made a dent in the universe. Bruce Lee's energy, optimism, struggles, and visions are on display in this volume.

the real Bruce Lee....

I thought this book offered a completely different perspective of Bruce Lee and offered quality reading into the personal life of a famous martial artist. His letters were very honest, thought-provoking, and genuine from beginning to end. There was one very short and disturbing letter towards the end of the book which, in my opinion, was a significant clue as to why he passed so early and I hope other readers can understand this clue as well.
John Little did an extraordinary job of presenting the letters in order and importance as with all of his books on Bruce Lee. Highly recommended!

A Peek into Lee

This collection of correspondence gives the reader a chance to peek into the mind and life of Bruce Lee. We get to tag along on his first trip to the US since his birth, his friendships, his marriage, his children, what he thought of the jet set, how the dog was eating, father-son bonding, etc. His heart went into every word, as his hand interpreted the flow of his mind.
Bruce's widow, Linda Emery Lee Cadwell, mentions in one of the forwards that until the last year of his life, Bruce didn't have enough money to make excessive long distance phone calls. I'd hate to sound selfish, but, lucky for us.

About the Author

Helena Carreiras is professor at the department of sociology of the University Institute for Labor, Business and Technologies (ISCTE) and researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) in Lisbon. Her research interests include armed forces and society, gender issues and methodology of the social sciences.
