This newest edition of critical care policies updates the old version, adding chlorhexidine as the prep for procedures simplifying some procedures with icons. The new procedures that have been added, Noninvasive Ventilation, Fecal Management Systems, as well as several others have made this resource even more valuable. As always, when I update procedures or write new ones this is my primary source. Even my Med-Surg associates have found this manual helpful! I would reccomend this to everyone.

Incredible, Amazing, Beautiful... Perfect :)

As a beta for this author I'm always excited to get the email that another book is ready for me to look at. This author just NEVER disappoints! I'm sooo in love with all her boys! The way her stories are told just draws you in until you lose all sense of time, of reality actually. You start reading and get lost in it. Which is what a reader wants.
First off I was so excited to see all the other guys.. I missed them! Red and Bull... Well they captured my heart in For a Reason.. And I was incredibly thrilled to have this wedding take place! Red needed to belong, to know that he was part of the Bull's family and that isn't going to be able to be taken from him now. I can't imagine the sense of peace and security that gives him. The wedding was perfect, the vows amazing! And the few surprises about the other couples... Love it! One of my favorite lines in this book... "This isn't the beginning of our new life together. This is a sweet ending to Bull and Red's romance. This was an unexpected installment spurred by the delighted author who witnessed a historical event in her lifetime: the legalization of Gay Marriage in the US and Ireland. Despite all the angst, it was finally accepted that indeed, two men or two women can and do fall in love and have the right to get married. Just like every other human being and dogs on this planet.

Bull asks Red to marry him and of course, Red says yes. Both men deserved their happiness and when they announce the good news to their friends, all were elated at the concept. Then the preparations begin and we catch a glimpse of what the other men think as well as the family members both attending and absent. We catch a glimpse of how their decision affects those around them as well. And of course, they go to Disney Land for the day and all. Sweet. Fun. Fast.

This is a make-you-feel-elated kind of book, one that sets the muscles to freeze on smile. Recommended for those who love Red and Bull (although frankly, I call them RedBull).

This was the wedding of the year!!! Thank you so much for the invitation to attend. Everything about it was beautiful. We have watched the relationship between Bull and Red become stronger with each story. To see this wonderful storybook wedding play out was touching, heartwarming and fun. I was so happy and couldn't wait to read it when I saw this story. It was great to see all the original characters in attendance so we have an idea of how they're doing. I loved this story, it really touched my heart. Thanks Jessie G., for the gift of good feelings I took away from this story. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS AFFORDABLE SERIES!!!!

good book after a bad breakup...

I wish I didn't NEED to read this book but I did. It was very helpful and it's a quick read. The author shares portions of her journal and goes into detail about a painful breakup that she had. Scriptures are mixed in as are questions to get you thinking about your situation and your healing. There's a section about toxic types and it was very helpful. She paints a beautiful illustration of Ruth and Boaz as the basis for a healthy love relationship.

I commend the author for being able to share so openly her hurt and pain and embarrassment. One of the big things I got out of the book was that I may never fully understand why things happened in the relationship but if I accept it I have a much better chance of healing and moving forward.

I would recommend this book to anyone who believes in God and is going through a painful breakup. The advice here will certainly help you as you move forward. By the end of the book you will be on the path to being healed and not only that but also encouraged about future healthy relationships.

Just What The Relationship Doctor Ordered!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed "Love Hangover." I highly recommend this book not only to those who have experienced a tumultuous break up, but also to Christian singles who are looking to venture down relationship lane. Although I was not going through a bad break up, I was able to relate to many of the feelings, situations, and dilemmas expressed by the authors. "Love Hangover" offers insightful scriptures geared towards opening the readers eyes to qualities and characteristics that should be evident in a healthy Christian relationship. In addition, the "medical perspective" offered by Dr. Hawkins was an excellent enhancement to this well written book. Kudos to both Shewanda and Germaine for providing me with a resource that I will most definitely reference in the future as a check point to confirm that my relationship building blocks are in order!!

Time to move on

Love Hangover is a must read by every single person that has experienced or is experiencing a break-up. Shewanda Riley and Germaine Hawkins explains in detail the steps that are needed to "Get Over" that lost loved one. The steps are realistic and practical, such as recognizing signs of suffering and tips for recovery. Adding substance, Shewanda creatively uses Bible verses to accentuate the book's mission. Love Hangover will appeal to the individual who is looking to mend a broken heart as well as the devot Christian who believes that God will supply all of their needs.

great novel, bad edition

Yes, this is a great novel, though I personally think the last three pages were a big mistake. But this review is about the "new, corrected edition" by Mr. Polk, which, I'm afraid, is a literary and scholarly travesty. Readers will be well advised to stick with the original 1946 text.; the fact that it has been a force in American life for over 50 years, and that in the 43 years before his death Warren never gave any indication he was dissatisfied with it, should be reason enough. (A cynic would argue that the only reason for the new edition was to extend the copyright.)
Polk went back to Warren's original typescript draft to restore many of the passages, phrases, and stylistic features that were changed or deleted in the editorial process before publication (and approved by Warren); and he claims that his editorial decisions have created a superior novel. The first problem is that, except for a very sketchy 10-page essay, Polk gives the reader no help in judging for himself. A respectable scholarly edition would at the least indicate, at the bottom of each page or the back of the book, each instance in which the first edition text has been changed and where the change came from (the draft was edited by several hands, including Warren's). A reader who wants to assess Polk's work will have to have both editions in hand and scan page by page, and even then will not know whose decisions Polk has overruled. Thus Polk puts himself beyond criticism.
Polk's essay tries to justify his decisions, but his illustrations are merely anecdotal and offer no consistent editorial principles or methodology. I haven't the space here to go through a critique point by point; suffice it to say, I'm not convinced by any of his examples, including the reversion from Willie Stark to Willie Talos. Polk seems to be one of those editors who believes that the closer you get to the author's very first words on paper, the better or the more authentic your version will be, since then you are closest to the "white heat of creativity." But this is one of the silliest forms of romanticism still in existence. And I suspect it runs directly again Warren's own philosophy of history. Polk may think he has restored history, but in fact he has falsified it, for the history was the event of publication.
Polk writes: "Many may feel that Warren's at least tacit approval of the [original] editors' changes-indeed, his gratitude for them-should argue against a new edition. But his `approval' may have come from fatigue, from pressures of one sort or another, from the years of constant work on it. Indeed, his very closeness to the novel may have prevented him from exercising his own good judgment, and in any case this version indicates that he had written better than he knew." Ah, but surely Mr. Polk knows? No, these are the lamest of speculations, for which there is no evidence, and the surest signs that Polk's fantasies are in danger of effacing Warren's work.

The best book I ever read. Don't miss it!

Born in Kentucky, Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) had a long and prestigious literary career, his huge body of work including poetry, essays, textbooks, history and novels. "All the King's Men", written in 1946, won a Pulitzer Prize and I can well understand why. First of all there are the words, lots of them, words that flow and caress and make liberal use of just the right tiny details to get to the essence the people he dscribes. Never have I seen such artful characterization and I found I was re-reading some of these descriptions just for the pure beauty of the way he used his words. And yet those words never got in the way of the story; they enhanced it. It is also a piece of history as the author brings alive the South of 1920s and 1930s.
The story is about Willie Stark, man of humble origin who rose to power as a governor of an unnamed Southern state and is supposedly loosely based on the life of Huey Long, the Governor of Louisiana. But the main character is really Jack Burden, the narrator of the story. He's a reporter when he meets Willie Stark early in his career and is there as witness his political rise. Later, he works directly for Willie and becomes a key player in the blackmailing and political intrigue that surrounds the Governor. We come to know Jack through the people in his life as well as his own internal introspections and watch the swirl of events that grow in depth and complexity. Nothing is quite what it seems at first, and there are multiple sub-stories that unfold as the basic action of the book moves along. And then, just when I think I understand it all, there is yet another and another layer of depth and meaning. Everything has an effect on everything else. I found the book impossible to put down, thinking about it all the time, not only as it related to the story itself, but also how it applies to my own life.
This is perhaps the best book I ever read and I can't heap enough praise on it. It is clearly a masterpiece and I give it my very highest recommendation. It's a present to yourself to read it. Don't miss it!

An Absolutely Wonderful Book!

It is extremely hard to sit down and write a review for any piece of classic literature for there is very little a reviewer can say that is new. Of course, for a book to be considered a classic most of its reviewers have to have had a favorable opinion of the work and all a new reviewer can do is concur or disagree. In this case, I couldn't possibly agree more with previous reviewers who have written rave reviews of this book.

This is not so much the story of Willie Stark, who was Willie Talos in the original manuscript, as it the story of Jack Burden, the man telling the story. It really seems to be the story of a young man and his road to maturity. That young man is Jack Burden and Stark seems to be just a convenient focal point around which Warren weaves his story. The plot is very well laid out and flows very well from beginning to end, which is quite an accomplishment when one considers all of the subplots to be found in this book. As Burden tells his story he often wanders down memory lane, recalling events which his story has recalled. Each subplot builds to it's own climax while also building toward the climax of the main story and the reader is swept along like a barrel on the Niagara River. Just as the reader feels as if he can put the book aside for a while, another subplot begins to ascend through the story and the reader is again swept along unable to pause. I got so caught up in one of the subplots that I was late for a very important appointment. I just couldn't stop until I found out what happened.

Stark is obviously supposed to resemble Louisiana Governor Huey Long and he very much does so. If one also reads T. Harry Williams biography of Long they will see just how strong the resemblance is. There are several morals and messages to be drawn from this story including thoughts on good and evil and past and future. In addition to the messages though, one has to admire the incredible amount of research Warren had to have done to write this book. Warren of course was alive and well during Huey Long's reign and that had to help him but in all events described his historical accuracy is uncanny. For example, one of the subplots involves Jefferson Davis in a minor way and even in delving in things well beyond his own memories Warren laces the story with many accurate details. In one passage, Warren relates that Davis missed the steamboat that was to carry him on the first leg of his trip to Montgomery to assume the Presidency of the new Confederacy. Warren points out that the boat left Davis Landing and then was halted out in the river while a smaller boat brought the new President out to get on board. A historical fact that would not be common knowledge but that is entirely accurate.

Many people avoid books that are considered to be top-flight works of literature. These people often assume that such books must be dull and so philosophical that they are beyond the average reader. In some instances this may be the case but not with this book. Warren has turned out a masterpiece that is not only fun to read but is so enjoyable that the reader will hate to come to the end. There are messages to be found here, both obvious and subtle but do not worry about the messages. They will come through on their own as you sit back and enjoy the ride over the falls.

Trashy celebrity bios are usually diminished by the fact that we've already heard the stories about Lonnie and Burt, or Madonna and Sean, or whoever the current target is. Author Stephen Fried manages to get all the sleaze value plus a lot of surprises by choosing supermodel Gia Carangi as his topic. Although her face is widely recognized, Gia finished her modeling career in a blaze of heroin and disease just before the time when models became celebrities with name recognition. Her life is the perfect fodder for the exploitation market, but Fried goes beyond that with fluid prose and a reporter's nose for tracking down sources. His stories about her teenage years, with their mix of late nights in Philadelphia's gay clubs, manic worship, and glam-style imitation of David Bowie, as well as tales of Gia's ability to seduce her friends, male and female, are the product of a lot of work and make for very interesting reading. Gia's unabashed homosexuality and early death from AIDS make her story a palimpsest of life on the edge in the America of the 1980s.

"Gia" Marie Carang (1960-1986) hit the fashion world like a storm in the late 1970s, after she was discovered by model agent Wilhelmina Cooper; soon she was pictured on the covers of Vogue and Cosmopolitan , delighting photographers with her androgynous look. Relying on interviews with Gia's family and friends, freelance writer Fried details her meteoric rise and tragic fall into drug addiction and death from AIDS. Although Gia lived an independent life as a teenager, dividing her time between the Pennsylvania homes of her estranged parents and openly conducting love affairs with other young women, she evidently could not cope with the stresses of success. Fried brings to life the drug-drenched milieu of the 1980s fashion industry, but fails to dig beneath the flamboyant, rebellious attitude Gia presented to the world to provide insight into her character--although he does convey her troubled relationship with her mother. One of the biggest "whatever happened to... ?" queries in the fashion world gets answered here, as Fried, a writer for Philadelphia magazine, details the rise (cover of Vogue ) and fall (death by AIDS) of Gia Carangi, a sultry young beauty who shot to prominence--and shot heroin--during the 1970s disco heyday. It's also a big "what if" story: if Gia had not died, Cindy Crawford (dubbed "baby Gia") may not have become the overexposed supermodedel she is today. Fried obviously means Gia's harrowing life to be partly a cautionary tale for all those young girls who wish to be models. However, Gia had many problems (broken home, drug use, confused sexuality) even before she stepped in front of a camera. Fried deridingly describes a 20/20 segment on modeling as "a report meant to detail 'the dark and anxious' side of the modeling business but manages somehow to make the whole enterprise seem extremely glamorous anyway," yet his saga, packed with juicy scoops about other models and photographers, has the same effect. In other words, this book will have a tremendous appeal to a general audience. For all public libraries.

Intrigued by the HBO movie "Gia"?

Surprisingly relevant to a large segment of people: women, mothers, and daughters, lesbians, sexually ambivalent women, people who have faced addiction, and those touched by AIDS.

After reading this well researched account of gorgeous supermodel Gia Carangi's very brief life, I'm still undecided if she was merely an over indulged pretty junkie or a tragic victim of her own beauty and dysfunctional family. Like most things though, the truth is far more complex and is probably somewhere in the middle. What is clearly apparent is that Gia's looks, and the ruthless profit driven world of fashion that uses and spits out beautiful girls in a macabre machine draped in gold lame and false promises, provided the catalyst that led to her demise.

From awkward pre-teen to AIDS victim at 26, Fried covers Gia's life through unflinching eyes and takes the reader on a heady journey: latch-key teen from a broken family, David Bowie fanatic, meteoric rise (at the impressionable age of 17 no less) to official globe trotting uber-hottie, drug experimentation that eventually led her to the seedy heroin shooting galleries of NYC's infamous Lower East Side, black-balled from the tight knit modeling world, relocating to the underbelly of Atlantic City in an unbelievably destructive relationship, then total rehabilitation only to be finally destroyed by AIDS in a time when AIDS was just being understood. Oh yes, it's a heady journey indeed and Fried deserves more than a nod for navigating the reader through it.

An insightful look into what it means to be more than merely pretty in America. Especially when the role of glamour girl is not especially welcome.

Ain't Enough Stars For This Book!

This book should be in every American home.
It is a brilliant telling of a tragic situation, in which a very beautiful young woman was placed, without the core values or life skills to negotiate it. What woman divorces her husband AND her children? What woman allows her 16 year-old daughter to move to New York City, unchaperoned? There is no excuse for the lack of parenting. The book is an excellent story of how fashion, i.e. advertising, works, and her stellar place within it. She was ill-equipped to utilize her status within the fashion community to create a beautiful life for herself. Her habit became an addiction. Her addiction became a disease. Her disease became a death sentence. It truly is a tragic story. but, still, there remains a sad, melancholy beauty that is still reflected in sensual. elegant images of this young Italian girl.
Her legacy will endure.

Gia comes alive in this book - vivid !

This book closes the door on the movie - with this book u know the true answers an the reality of Gia's life . She seemed to know how far she came which is good an her purpose is such an example for us all . I finished the book in 5 days - an I didn't want to but it's such a page turner . Gia was so alone in her life but she seemed very funny as well wish I can say more Stephen fried did a great job wish he would update more recent stuff on some of the people in the book . This is a go to book if u want to read the truth about her instead of the movie . No one was truly there for Gia . Mt daughter would not be in the rain sleeping on a mattress getting raped or at a bus station with full blown aids alone while I go check on my sones new baby arrival ? Thank u Stephen for the books honesty . When I say I wish I could say more its because I have a lot to say in reference to Gia's acquaintances an the people she should not have trusted . In the end Gia kept people in her life for all the wrong reasons because her family was not there for her . So she depended on her friends an loves for everything an that was used against her as well by these people . If your interested in the truth read this book Gia was noT just another pretty face at all . An her life was anything but perfect she was always alone even in the end she was alone .
