About the Author
Muhammad H. Haykal was one of the most renowned Islamists in 20th century Egypt, and an accomplished scholar and writer. Having studied in Egypt and Paris, Haykal mastered the techniques of historical reasearch and scholarship. At first, he was a vocal protagonist of Westernizing modernism, and authored a prodigious amount of literary production. Two decades of involvement in Egypt's struggle for liberation from colonial Britain, however, caused him to gravitate to Islamic studies. He devoted the rest of his career to the study of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and of his Companions. Five masterpieces were the result: The Life of Muhammad, The Islamic Revolution, The Life of Abu Bakr, The Life of "Umar al Faruq, and The Home of Revelation.

About the TRANSLATOR: and Prof. Isma'il al-Faruqi, 1921-1986, was a pioneer of Islamic studies on the North American continent. He was widely recognized by Muslims and non-Muslims as an authority of Islam and comparative religion. Prior to the creation of Israel, he was governor of Galilee. He received his M.S. degree at Harvard, and his Ph.D. in Western philosophy at Indiana University, Bloomington. He taught at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, International Islamic University in Pakistan, and at many universities in North America. the most comprehensive book i've read about mohammed

i've read some of books about mohammed, but this one is the most comprehensive one. even reading the preview made me fall in love with this book. it put mohammed just as a human being, not put him as a holly creature or full of magic things. the writer described and told the story about mohammed with a deep and wide research. he used different resources and gave very rational reasons for everything he presented by using arguments and comaprisons. this book also very good to understand mohammed and islam. it presented mohammed strategies on spreading islam on a rational way. excellent!!

A Throwback to Islam's Golden Age

This book is extremely important in these modern times, where so many Muslims erroneously hold the hadiths up higher than the Glorious Qur'an. Over the years all kinds of nonsense involving the supposed mystical practices and miracle workings of the Prophet were subscribed to hadith and taken as gospel, despite the many, MANY things Allah said in the Qur'an about the Unseen being quite limited in our lives... even the Prophet's life.

I'm glad Haykal put together a real biography of Islam's founder in which he cut out all the very un-Islamic, superstitious nonsense the "Hadithians" have inserted into the Faith. This is the second-best book in Islam after the Qur'an itself, and does a much better job of showing how Muhammad "walked the Qur'an" than the whole lot of so-called authenticate mystical hadith.

A must read!

This book explores the life of The Prophet in amazingly deep detail. The author does more than just explore religious ideas. It gives great insight into the historical context that led to the rise of Islam. It sheds light into Christianity and Judaism of the day and how they influenced and even provoked the atmosphere of the Arab nations. The author present Islam as a faith that is based upon pure logic and reason, thus the author does not stoop to the level of needing to convince people through signs and wonders. Haykal contends that the Qu'ran and the powerful rise of Islam's influence and reason is proof enough. A western reader might say that this work proud and boastful, but so for on Haykal has had enough chutzpah to present Islam and the life of the Prophet with passion and full conviction.

Eye-opening, life-saving, most enjoyable read.

For the purpose of this review, I thought it's important to give some of my background. I'm a 24-year-old medical student and I'm a practising Muslim, having learned Islamic studies ever since I was little up till I was 19, so I have extensive knowledge about it. I have always been inquisitive and questioning by nature, and I brought these into the realm of my Islamic studies to further understand Islam, much to the discomfort of other students ("common Muslims" are discouraged from having "obviously questioning" discussions as they are deemed to have inadequate scholarly knowledge). After years of study (including comparing other faiths), even though I was brought up as a Muslim, I believed in Islam on my own accord. I realised my same-sex attraction ever since I was about 9, but I thought I was attracted to females as well, so I concluded I was a bisexual some years later. I have been taught that homosexuality has no place in Islam, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought I could always settle with a girl. Late 2009, after further reflection and exploration, I concluded that I was actually gay, not having any sexual attraction toward females. This epiphany brought intense internal conflict - a battle between my religion and my sexuality. I desperately searched for answers.

Scott Kugle is the first Muslim to publish widely on the issue of homosexuality and transgender identity in Islam. Like some gay Muslim advocates, I expected a very emotionally-driven writing to defend queers when I bought this book. Instead, I was delightfully surprised by his neutral-sounding, critical and objective writing, reflecting years of careful research and synthesis of valid ideas. This book is divided into systematic sections, bringing readers into natural progression across his arguments. His introductory chapter is a wonderful summary of his whole book, telling readers what to expect in this book. He begins soon with discussion into the nature of human sexuality (including inherent nature of homosexuality) as a basis for his argument throughout the rest of the book.

The next chapter is all about the Qur'an's stand on the issue of homosexuality. It's about liberating the Qur'an from shackles of previous traditional/classical (mis)interpretation of this issue, which I had come to accept as an absolute "fact" from my years of study. The arguments are laid out logically and coherently, free from "twisting of the fact" as accused by the majority of Islamic authorities. This chapter changed my view of the scholars' interpretation of the Qur'an as almost infallible. A very eye-opening section of the book.

The following chapter talks about the hadith (Prophet Muhammad's sayings). In desperation to make syaria laws and rulings, jurists have used weak and (highly possibly) false/fabricated hadiths to justify condemnation of homosexuality and punishments for homosexual acts. Throughout my Islamic studies, I have surprisingly discovered many weak or fabricated hadiths that the "common Muslims" have accepted to be truth, so this chapter of the book serves to reinforce my discovery. Another eye-opening chapter if you aren't familiar with the studies of hadiths.

Next comes the chapter on assessing fiqh (Islamic legal reasoning). It focuses on the legal standing of homosexuality and male-male anal intercourse, some female-female relations. This chapter and the next chapter is tightly linked, as the idea to legalise homosexual relationships (in the eyes of God) via marriage (nikah) is explored, which requires critical reassessment of the current (patriarchal) idea of nikah between man and woman. This chapter provides solutions to the "problem" of homosexual relationships, and I commend the author for providing solutions too instead of simply presenting his arguments for homosexuality. The last chapter before the conclusion presents points for transgender individuals, which is also a great read.

Overall, this book is simply a superb buy, and in retrospect, I would have gladly paid even more for the quality of writing that I receive from this book. Who do I recommend it too? Well, of course for LGBTIQ Muslims this book is a must-read. I'd also recommend all Islamic teachers, imams, scholars, and authorities to give this book a read and please do so with an open and neutral mind, as I have forced myself to do (due to my classical/traditional Islamic understanding). For LGBTIQ Muslims, I would also recommend borrowing/buying this book for your Muslim friends and family members who might have trouble understanding our position. I also think that non-Muslims can benefit from this book, to help them understand that Islam is accommodating to queers. Basically, "Homosexuality in Islam" deserves a place in everyone's bookshelf.

It has helped me to reconcile with my religion and sexuality. Scott Kugle has probably saved my life from one of constant internal conflict and depression with his writing. What are you waiting for? Now go buy this book!

An academic must.

These concepts shared in this book are nothing short of brilliant. Without ever having to refute or deny any words of the Qur'an itself, Siraj brings forth a truly educated, thorough, and refreshing alternative perspective to what many educated individuals (Muslim or otherwise) see as rigid and disingenuous interpretation of the faith (ie conservative straight males perspective ONLY). It is these 21st century ideas that can help bridge the divide among Islam in other cultures, should they choose to do so. Siraj talks about people and the purpose of faith and defies the taboo without apology a without undermining the faith.

The naysayers are all the same. The same things they said about Fatima Mernissi and anyone else who challenges the old patriarchal ways about anything.

On a personal note, this book not only changed my entire perspective of Islam (for the better no less), but helped me write one of the best academic research papers I think I have written. It is a must read for anyone interested in this very complex subject.

Love it!

I am a physical therapy student that recently graduated with my athletic training degree. This book was one of the required reading for my therapeutic exercise class in undergrad. This was an excellent book. I used this as a reference in many of my athletic training classes. After I graduated with an athletic training degree, I started pursuing my doctoral degree in physical therapy. This semester I am taking a therapeutic exercise class and I have been using this book as a reference throughout this course. Although we have other books for this class, I think that the layout in this book makes it easy to refer back to topics we are discussing. Many of my classmates like to sell back their textbooks but this is one that I will keep in my library and will also use it to help study for my boards exam. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in therapeutic exercise.

Fabulous book

One of my all time favorite books!

Written by an early libertarian, Charles Erskine Scott Woods, "Heavenly Discourse" addresses issues from the early 1900s in a humorous manner by presenting them in a play format. The play takes place in heaven and the characters are both historical and religious figures. The author's honest and open questions of thoughts and mores of our society are well expressed by the variety of characters utilized.

C.E.S. Woods' background of soldier, lawyer and then author prepared him to have a broad and worldly view of the topics he addresses. His experiences of working with mankind at its best and worst provided him with vision that he shares in this text. One's attention is rapidly caught with the first line where Jesus is speaking with God as a son to a father and asks if he is a Jew.

Many memorable lines are spoken by the various characters with it summed in an immortal line spoken by God as he decrees "The stupid shall perish."

This is a book not unlike Mark Twain's "Letters from Earth" in its use of satire to question so much of the dogma me live by and often fail to take the time to question.

Very highly recommended.

A heavenly review

I read this book whle in college in the early 50's. I thought it so good I loaned it to my religion professor and he wouldn't give it back.
I bought the book last year and read it again. In this day and age I don't think it would be published.
There are still some funny parts in it but it is so radically anti religion and pro communist I didn't enjoy as much as i did when I was a kid.

Its a book, nothing else

What can i say, if you need the book for class there is no way around it. I personally found the book pretty darn boring and a pain to read. Luckily in my class the book was not entirely required, so i avoided reading it most of the time and still got an A. Plus most of the material in the book seems like common sense or maybe because i have learned most of this material in other classes.

I didn't care for this book and I only bought it because I had to have it for a class. I suppose if you were going to go into this area, it might be of value, but I was not interested in it and only bought it to satisfy the requirements for my class.

I got this book for school. It was not enjoyable and I would not recommend it if your looking for just something to read. If you have to get it, than make sure there's lots of coffee for you to drink.
