Skip the book - use the online help

I bought this book for a graduate level Design of Experiments class. It was not on the course list, but I figured the book might give me a leg up in the class. (We used Montgomery's DOE textbook to which this is a companion.)

My recommendation would be to skip the book and invest an hour or two just playing with Minitab. It is a fairly simple program to use, and every single command window has a "help" button - and for the most part, the help is indeed useful, providing a thorough explanation, including not only a "how to" as well as the underlying theory or formula. If you screw up, Minitab's error windows will usually guide you in the right direction.

Over the course of the semester, I only referenced the book a couple of times, and in all the cases, I found a better answer either through Montgomery's textbook, poking around Minitab, or using Google.

If you are uncomfortable diving into a new piece of software, or you like having things explicitly spelled out for you, there might be some justification. But for the majority of cases, Montgomery's DOE book will probably suffice.

Disappointed!

Disappointed! I'm in a Blackbelt class. My instructor favors Excel, but we have Minitab at work. My goal in purchasing this book was to determine how to use Minitab. One of the difficulties in using Minitab is how to configure the data. I had hoped to see how the author configures the data within the Minitab worksheet. Unfortunately the URL in the book, where the sample data is supposed to be stored, errors out and the Wiley site has the wrong data. Wiley refuses to fix the problem--I would think the author would enthusiastically cooperate, but I doubt they have taken the time to call him. I will check the Wiley site from time to time to see when and if the data is corrected. Until the data is fixed, this book is worthless for my purposes. Wiley trouble ticket number 100908-000196.

pointless

This is little more than an answer key companion to the book - something that should be given in the textbook itself, but is an excuse to make you pay more money. If you can possibly get away without buying it do so as all you will get is just the final answer (no explanation of how to reach it) and a bunch of minitab output (that in most cases you could get yourself by just downloading the free minitab software). Pointless companion to a badly written book.

A legend in poker, very solid material, and good starting points if branching out to more than just NLH.

well,, its a new poker world out there since this was written, it absolutely STILL is helpful, but, the NLH games have definitely changed up, and changed up a lot ( if you are playing Vegas tourneys, WSOP, WPT, Circuit events, etc.).. those are just not the same games of 10 yrs ago. You had better be on top of how things are being played nowadays, or get left in the dust. If your games are more low dollar entry in Vegas, Biloxi, California, etc. a good part of this is still a sound basis to any game, just not the ONLY basis anymore, like it was when first came out.
You do have more than just NLH in here, so if you are not familiar with some other game, this is a very good jumping off point. I just wouldnt pick this up as my ONLY book, not anymore. If you want improvement, this will still help, but, if you are already banging heads against players in higher buy-in tourneys, its value is more of bits n pieces you can still add to your repotoire , and pull out when the play looks right. I have about a dozen NLH books, last was written only 2 yrs ago, and author said IT might be out of date by about NOW... i would hold ON to this book ( and will ) , as things go in cycles, and 10 yrs DOWN the road, this might be just what you want to re-read.

A Worthy successor

Well, many years after Super System, Doyle did it again, offering a book with his recognisable name on the title and top class contributors to it. It is a book worth studying for anyone interested in learning to play various forms of poker and seeing how some top pros think about the game

I won't give it five stars only because I think the weakest section (not poor or bad, just not as good as other sections or as expected) of the book is actually Doyle's contribution about No Limit Holden, not actually bringing anything new to the world of No Limit Holdem... And our reviews here have to be objective, while our admiration to the grandfather of today's poker revolution is unlimited.

Rewrite, retread, or second volume?

There is much debate on whether this book is simply an update to the old classic or a bona fide second volume and whether one should buy both (as the author recommends) or just the new one. For the majority of people (whose primary interests lie in various forms of Hold 'em and Omaha) you really only need to buy Super System 2. The chapter on no-limit is essentially the same and the section on limit in the original book is outdated because of the changes in blind/ante structure that have occurred over the years. The new book has chapters on pot-limit Omaha, Omaha high/low (Omaha8), Eight or Better (7 stud high/low), Triple Draw (2 to 7 and A to 5 lowball), tournament strategy, and Mike Caro's section on tells. If you get the new book and don't get the original, you're mostly missing out on a bunch of games that casinos rarely, if ever, spread (although you might see them in some home games). You'd miss things like 5-card draw (lowball and jacks or better), Razz (7 stud for low), etc. Probably the only meaningful (by that, I simply mean mainstream) chapter you'd be missing would be Chip Reese's section on Seven Card Stud. I personally don't think it's profound enough to warrant buying the original book just for that chapter, but great 7 stud books are hard to come by (compared to hold 'em).

Yes, the book has its share of "filler" (preface, forward, intro, history, and plugs for his poker site) as you might expect from a book of this size, but you basically get all that "filler" at no charge, because the book is still reasonably priced for what you get. Even if you were only interested in Hold 'Em and Omaha, you'd be hard-pressed to take the same money and get decent books on limit Hold 'em, no-limit Hold 'em, pot limit Omaha, and Omaha8. You could probably find a single book on one or two of those four and have some money left over, but that's about it. If you're really interested in all of the chapters in Super System 2, then you could probably rate this book a 5. If you're going to ignore or gloss over half of it, then a 4+ is about right.

Excellent guide for overcoming loneliness

David D. Burns, M.D., has been a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine since 1995, the same school where he received his M.D. degree in the 1970's. From 1975 to 1995, Dr. Burns served on the clinical faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and served as Acting Chief of Psychiatry at the Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He has also written: Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy; The Feeling Good Handbook; and Ten Days to Self-Esteem. He teaches workshops for the public and continuing-education seminars for mental health professionals. He was recently featured in a 90-minute nationally televised PBS program on depression entitled "Feeling Good"....
Though this book is primarily directed at single people struggling to find a compatible mate, I also found it very useful, even though I am happily married, for two major reasons: (a) Loneliness. IF YOU'RE A SHY PERSON, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK

This book changed the way I thought about myself. I will never be the same again. There are so many helpful things in this book that I can't list them all, but what helped me the most was the realization that I am not a freak. Sounds simple, but I believed that I was, ever since high school. Now I know that I am completly normal, and life is full of possibilities. If you are afraid of people, think that your coworkers are thinking bad thoughts about you, can't even approach someone of the opposite sex, or are just shy, you need to get this book. You don't have to stay stuck where you are. Don't let life pass you by.

The Love of My Life

The most powerful and effective advice on loving yourself that I have ever read or heard anywhere.

His idea that really helped me gain a sense of self-reliability and self-love was that when you're already a fully formed adult, you actually don't need others' love in order to be happy or survive in life.

You only need one person to complete you, one person who will always have your back, who will always be there for you to love and comfort you.

That person must be you before all others.

His Pleasure Predicting worksheet helped me to see that I did indeed enjoy doing things by and with myself very much, and although it's nice to have a boyfriend or friends to hang out with, I am capable of giving myself the love, support, and entertainment I need.

Everyone else is a plus, and not a must (quote from Diane Von Furstenberg---not in this book, but very much in line with Dr. Burns' philosophy).

Ever since doing the exercises and learning that concept from Dr. Burns, I no longer feel lonely when by myself, and have learned to fully enjoy my own company when I need time to think and do things by myself.

This is one of the most precious gifts I've ever received: the ability to be my own best friend, and the love of my own life. I hope you'll receive it too :-)

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I had read both "Angels & Demons" and "The Da Vinci Code," and found this novel to be a welcome departure from religion. Brown focuses on government conspiracies and scientific misinformation, and it's just as good of a story. I do think that the first 100 pages are very slow. I remember reading up to that point and thinking "oh, that's what this book is about." After the first 100 pages, the story picks up and becomes a suspenseful thrill-ride through the ice and snow. In the end, this was a great book that I recommend to anyone who enjoys Dan Brown books, or anyone who enjoys a good story! There are plenty of memorable moments, over-the-top action, and intrigue.

I bought this book as a gift for someone and then ended up reading it myself before they did. The hardback edition was great; the cover has held up remarkably well. I've thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Can the truth be found out in time?

Couldn't put it down!

Dan Brown did not disappoint with Deception Point! His knowledge is vast and impressive. This book is not as "symbolic" as Angels and Demons or The Da Vinchi Code, rather Brown intrigues us with his knowledge of scientific innovation. Deception Point is based on the (fictional) political scandal of the century! The Presidential hopeful uses NASA's failures to launch his campaign while the current President firmly stands behind NASA regardless of their past failures. Then NASA reveals the biggest news in the history of science, but did they make a mistake? The presidential hopeful's daughter, who already works for the President of the USA gets caught up in the scandal of all scandals and finds herself fighting for her life with no clue who she can trust with a cover-up of this magnitude in process. I loved it and couldn't stop reading late into the night...sometimes early into the morning! Let me know what you thought!
