About the Author
Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard are professors of art history at the American University in Washington, D.C., and are leading scholars in the field of feminist art history. Broude is the author of The Macchiaioli: Italian Painters of the Nineteenth Century (1987), Impressionism, A Feminist Reading: The Gendering of Art, Science, and Nature in the Nineteenth Century (1991), and Georges Seurat (1992). Garrard has written articles and reviews on feminism and art history, Jacopo Sansovino, Michelangelo and Raphael, and Renaissance sculpture. She is the author of Artemisia Gentileschi: The Image of the Female Hero in Italian Baroque Art (1989) and, with Broude, the coeditor of Feminism and Art History: Questioning the Litany (1982).

The essential overview of feminist art history

This is essential reading for anyone interested in feminist art history. It was one of the earlier scholarly compliations of critical articles concerning issues in visual representation of women as subject and by women as artists. Ranging from a study of images of women in Greek art, to an analysis of the psycho-social motivations of 20th century Expressionism, to an investigation of American quilting and its influence on contemporary art, each essay contributes to our understanding of paradigms which are basic in forming a new context-- a context which is needed to re-examine the white, Western male canon of standard art histories. The essays also provide a fundamental vocabulary for investigation of specific works, and aptly balance the feminist positions about art with vital, challenging interpretations of cultural conditions and biases which have affected our perception of gender and the place of art in societies over time. The introduction by the editors defines the content, nuance and strategy of the feminist art historical project and is as pertinent today as it was twenty years ago. I would recommend this book as a useful starting point for research and education; and for students, teachers or anyone willing to cast off the blinders of assumed histories.

About the Author

Santanu Chaudhury did his BTech (1984) in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering and PhD (1989) in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi. He was also Dean, Undergraduate Studies at IIT Delhi. He was awarded INSA medal for young scientists in 1993. He is a fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences, India. He is also a fellow of the International Association of Pattern Recognition. His research interests are in the areas of Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence and Multimedia Systems. He has published more than 150 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has been on the programme committee of a number of international conferences, including ICCV, ACCV, ICPR, ICVGIP, and PReMI.

Anupama Mallik did her BSc (1986) in Physics and Masters in Computer Applications (1989) from Delhi University, and PhD (2012) in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Her PhD thesis dealt with ontology based exploration of multimedia contents. She is associated with Multimedia research group of the Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Delhi and has worked as a Research Scientist in projects sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Her current research interests include Semantic web based applications, multimedia ontology, ontology applications in Internet of Things, and in cultural heritage preservation. She is a visiting faculty at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-D). She is a member of the ACM.

Hiranmay Ghosh is a principal scientist with TCS Innovation Labs Delhi and leads its multimedia research track. He received his PhD from IIT, Delhi and his BTech and BSc degrees from the University of Calcutta. His current research interests include multimedia systems, knowledge representation and reasoning, semantic web, intelligent agents, cognitive models and robotics. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT, Delhi and is associated with its multimedia research group. He is a member of the academic advisory committee of IIT, Ropar. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of ACM and IUPRAI.

Weissman tells the absorbing tale of an odyssey she shares with these and other brash visionaries who devote themselves to coffee with near-religious fervor, unquenchable energy, and geek-like attention to detail. This journey through the rituals and rivalries of today's ultra-premium coffee business begins in a sweltering Central American hotel, where "cupping" competition judges sniff and spit their way through hundreds of cups, detecting tobacco, chocolate, and blueberry in the brews.

Then, visiting remote farms in Nicaragua, Panama, and Burundi, the buyers encourage growers to improve coffee quality, offering fabulous prices for exquisite beans, and in so doing, they unwittingly upend existing markets. Dealing directly with farmers, the buyers sometimes run afoul of governments, the Fair Trade movement, cooperatives, and the farmers themselves. In Ethiopia—the mother ship of the coffee universe—the young coffee guys search for the birthplace of the legendary Geisha coffee, presumed genetic parent of the coveted, prize-winning Hacienda La Esmeralda Special. Instead, they discover a world of coffee not yet known—thousands of varieties never cultivated, never catalogued, never cupped.

Back home, Weissman examines how specialty roasters tap into a growing consumer fascination with premium coffee. She visits Stumptown in Portland, the rock-and-roll coffee roaster some consider the most cutting edge in the world; tracks the progress of Chicago's Intelligentsia, which will go anywhere and spend any amount to acquire the best beans and is now engaged in a high-stakes gamble to conquer the Los Angeles market; and explores Counter Culture's approach of teaching students, chefs, and foodies the secrets of high-end coffee while wholesaling beans to the hottest coffee bars and restaurants up and down the East Coast.

Like some of the other low star reviews said, this book was more like a fan writing about these "coffee guys" and not much else. I can see it being interesting on some levels about the history of third wave coffee, but I couldn't get over it just sounding like she was gushing about them. Unfortunately, it was to the point where I couldn't finish it.

This is a good introduction to the third wave coffee scene. More up to date if a bit narrower than previous books. Must reading for someone with a serious interest in the topic.

Wonderful, Engaging Coffee Read

Oh if only a book like this could replace coffee table books!

The author of God in a Cup does a superb job relating the growth of the specialty coffee world to the reader in a work that holds an accessability few other books devoted to the topic can claim. We join her right as she begins to elevate her palate, affording a non-indoctrinated reader the opportunity to investigate and grow while reading along. Of course, few have the opportunity to tag along with a couple of the industry's buyers as they head off to origin, but I feel that is where this work shines. Weissman does a superb job relating the humor, confusion, joy, and frustration of making dealings with growers and middlemen and jumping into the fray at conventions held by and for the professionals so deeply steeped in their world that it can be simultaneously exhillarating, alienating, and exhausting to try and join in.

This book is a case where the entire title must be given its due. This is a work that conveys the obsession of coffee geekdom in such a way that those involved really must admit that it is indeed obsession. But it is infectious, joyous obsession and here is is written well enough to spread that enthusiastic sense of discovery to the reader. I could not help but pull a shot of espresso on my day off at the cafe I work at after reading one chapter and the descriptions of some coffees really do demand accompaniment with a cup of Panamanian coffee. I am personally not a fan of the Clover coffee brewing system (vacpot and presses for life), but still felt excitement reading about their use to highlight flavors.

You should know that this is a book about the quest for great coffee, not a book about great coffee. It is about the people involved, not the product, and does not pretend to be about the beverage that results from so many people's work despite the wonderful descriptions of coffee that filter in and out throughout the book. The author's and our two primary featured buyers' journeys are the focus here.

A must read for coffee enthusiasts.
