This volume presents over 300 rare, behind-the-scenes images - many in full, vivid color - from the making of the first season and pilot episodes of the original, legendary Star Trek television series (NBC, 1966 - 1969) which starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. All of the photographs shown in this edition come from the author's personal collection, which is over four decades in the making and consists of thousands of rare NBC publicity shots, candid still photos/negatives taken on the Original Series sets, and rare Lincoln Enterprises film clips (the unused pieces of printed footage, called the "trims" and "outtakes", that were left over after the Desilu Studios film editors assembled the desirable footage into the finished master versions of the Star Trek episodes). The unused film clips were then discarded by the studio and sold to fans by Gene Roddenberry's company while the show was still in production. Many of these rare photos were featured in black-and-white format in the Saturn award winning three book series These Are The Voyages: TOS by Marc Cushman (Jacobs/Brown Press, 2013 - 2015); and now they are displayed - the majority in color - alongside a wealth of additional imagery. The author has personally digitally restored all of the rare photos in this edition, and has paid careful attention to recreating the bold and vivid colors that were present in the original broadcasts of the episodes. On a few occasions, the knowledge gained by the appearance of screen used TOS memorabilia at auction - such as the recent 2013 sale by Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles of Captain Kirk's Laser Rifle from the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before", or the 2010 sale of the Balok puppet head from "The Corbomite Maneuver" by the California auction house Profiles In History - has enabled the vintage imagery to be enhanced with real world, historically accurate colors. And the author has even, for the first time ever to his knowledge, colorized several black and white candid and publicity photos as some special additions to the contents of this volume. So, readers will enjoy some of the finest, historically accurate rare Star Trek photo restorations ever produced; featuring many entertaining images that they likely have never seen before. The rare pictures in this collection are all accompanied by informative descriptions, on occasion quite extensive, about the filming of the related scene. All told, this volume represents an entertaining and unique photographic history of the making of the first season of TOS.

About the Author
Gerald Gurian, born in Toronto, Canada, earned a B.A.Sc. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1985 and then spent the next 25 years in manufacturing systems design - most recently serving as a Senior Simulation Engineer with General Motors in Detroit, where he received a prestigious Boss Kettering Award in 2007, the company's highest internal recognition for technical innovation. Since 2008, Gerald has been the author and publisher of startrekpropauthority.com - a site dedicated to documenting the Art and Production History of the Star Trek franchise, with a special emphasis on The Original Series. In 2002, he authored a section in the book Trekkers: True Stories By Fans For Fans (ECW Press, edited by Nikki Stafford), and in 2012 helped to authenticate an early 1st season TOS Captain Kirk gold velour tunic that sold at auction in Los Angeles for just under $100,000 - a Shatner costume sales record. Gerald was also a significant contributor of rare Star Trek imagery to the book Star Trek: The Original Series 365 by Paula M. Block (Sept. 2010, Abrams Books). And from 2013 through 2014, he provided hundreds of rare images from his personal collection to the Jacobs/Brown Press Saturn Award winning three book series These Are The Voyages: TOS by Marc Cushman. Gerald is constantly supervised by his adorable and benevolent Pomeranian Minka.

A "Must Have Book" for the original Star Trek series fan despite all of its flaws
By mPm
This book, even with its shortcomings, is an impressive companion book to the "These Are the Voyages 3 book/seasons series of behind the scenes recounts from all those involved with the everyday, three seasons of production of the original Star Trek.
This book contains an impressive collection of both known and rare images from the original Star Trek season one
While this print on demand book is an impressive collection of film clip, film stock and photographic images from the image archives of its author, Mr Gerald Gurian, from all three seasons of production of the original Star Trek, the aggregate of these images collected for this season one book volume, suffers some from poor image editing/restoration, as well as to, maybe random decisions to size those rarer images that could have been made larger than they were presented in this book volume.
My rather strong criticisms of the quality and accuracy of this "print-on-demand", pictorial documentation volume of each episode of season one of Star Trek, come from Mr. Gurian's own decision to personally edit and modify these images, himself, instead of hiring a seasoned image editing professional with better, professionally standard image editing apps, more experience with getting the best and largest resolutions of images from film negatives, clip and photos and higher grade film and image scanning equipment that would have allowed Mr. Gurian the ability to showcase many of the rarer images at a larger size while still retaining a quality resolution for print.
While Mr. Gurian thoroughly and extensively documented his own procedures that he used to make all of his image archives viable for print at the beginning of his book (and I DO recognize and laud his own efforts to try and do his own restoration of his own Star Trek image archives) based on the various and uneven levels of success in producing accurate, high resolution images for editing/restoration/enlargement for print and not knowing anything about Mr. Gurian's own professional or semi-professional/amateur experiences in photography, digital photography or digital image creation, editing/restoration, I have to believe that his background in this area of expertise is limited to less than a professional digital image editing knowledge, limited knowledge of the tools/applications he used to convert these images to digital versions and some very amateur looking color corrected images that are either wrong colors are too saturated.
This is especially apparent in some color images that show the command and sciences uniform color as just plain wrong color due to bad color correction and/or over saturated color or attempts, perhaps, at "colorising" a black & white image.
Mr. Gurian had other color images he edited that had very accurate color, so I am at a loss to explain the handful of other color images in this book whose colors were way off from other more accurate color images.
As a long time digital image editing professional, myself, there are many techniques to increase both image size and resolution of image either at the initial scanning stage or post scanning stage in a comprehensive image editing app and there are, also, ways to get more accurate color of images during editing, also.
While his own clean up of all of these images was quite good, and I will give him the Kudos he deserves for the excellent digital clean up job that he did with all of the images he presented in this book, in my professional opinion, his other editing attempts were very uneven and amateur-ish and gives his first printed book efforts a less than professional polish.
Perhaps, if Mr. Gurian is still planning on presenting the last two Star Trek seasons in photos using the "print-on-demand' process, maybe he should seek a out a graphics/image editing prodessional who can help him with converting his image archives to high quality digital imagery that will have enough "built-in" resolution so he can present a better collection of larger images in the next two installments.
I did like that he chose a paper stock with a matte finish for the book to keep the gloss down and to present sharper, cleaner/clearer printed image.
I give this book a 5 for effort, but only a three for exexcution and the final printed result.
Still, if you own the "These Are the Voyages three book collection, you need to add this book volume and the other two volumes that may come to your collection as a companion set of Star Trek extensive and rare image books to go with the
extensive three volume/season behind the scenes books!
" To Boldly Go" is a MUST HAVE BOOK for any original Star Trek fans who think that they have seen every single photo or image from that production over all of the years.
You will be in for some amazing surprises, thanks to the extensive pictorial film archives of Mr. Gerald Gurian!

He has collected the most amazing images from The Original Series EVER
By Bret P. Smith
One look at this book and I knew Gerald Gurian loves "Star Trek" as much as me! He has collected the most amazing images from The Original Series EVER! He has painstakingly taken so much time to improve the quality of these 1960s images for this beautiful book. This book is the perfect follow-on and companion piece to Marc Cushman's These Are the Voyages books. Since this is Season One, I really hope Gerald is planning on Season Two and Season Three! I thoroughly enjoyed studying these rare photos and reading Gerald's descriptions for each. Great book, stunning photos and well-written! Highly recommended, especially for us Trek fans!

a great piece of Star Trek non-fiction.
By PiperDE
It seems more and more difficult to find something new that is related to the original series so I really enjoyed this. The behind the scenes pictures are fantastic and really added to my interest in Star Trek as a production back in the late 60's. An excellent addition to Marc Cushman's "These are the Voyages." Fits perfectly in my Star Trek non-fiction collection.
