Fantastic resource

I have all three volumes for Richard Warren and they are an extremely valuable resource. All the volumes in this series are well documented and reliable. All genealogies contain errors, its just a fact of life, but this series contains very few as far as I can tell. I use as many sources as I can find to verify my information, and have found this series of books to be extremely accurate. There is over 100 years of research in this series and it shows! I also have volume 1 of the John Alden books and they are just as great. Will buy more volumes as time progresses. If you have Mayflower ancestry, get the volumes that contain your ancestor(s), they are well worth the price.

I am related to Richard Warren who was on the Mayflower. This book is the middle book in a set of 3 books. I am descended from 2 children of Richard Warren who are Nathaniel and Elizabeth. This book provides me with information that I did not have.

Book is absolutely wonderful! It has a beautiful cover and is a treasure. It has the information as stated. I found it a big help in verifying my ancestry. Each volume has the fifth generation for different children so be sure you are getting the volume you need.

“Come on!” he bellowed. “Charge!”
His men responded. They rushed forward.
Whetstone’s crowd had broken, scattered, run for cover: doorways, house-corners, alleys. A few bullets whined around Fargo. He could not shoot down into the street now for fear of hitting his own men.
Satisfied, still snarling like a maddened timber wolf, he fell down, slid to the back of the cabin, dropped off into a drift behind the house.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Benjamin Leopold Haas was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1926. His imagination was inspired by the stories of the Civil War and Reconstruction as told by his Grandmother, who had lived through both. Ben’s father was also a pioneer operator of motion picture theatres, “ ... so I had free access to every theatre in Charlotte and saw countless films growing up, hooked on the lore of our own South and the Old West.”

Largely self educated (he had to drop out of college in order to support his family), Ben wrote his first story, a pulp short for a western magazine, when he was just eighteen. But when he was drafted into the Army, his dreams of becoming a writer were put on hold. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, and saw action in the Philippines.

Returning home to Charlotte (and later Sumter, in South Carolina) in 1946, Ben married Douglas Thornton Taylor from Raleigh four years later. The father of three sons (Joel, Michael and John), Ben was working for a steel company when he sold his first novel in 1961. The acceptance coincided with being laid off, and thereafter he wrote full time.

A prolific writer who would eventually pen some 130 books under his own and a variety of pen-names, Ben wrote almost twenty-four hours a day. “I tried to write 5000 words or more every day, scrupulous in maintaining authenticity,” he later said.

Ben wanted to be a mainstream writer, but needed a way to finance himself between serious books, and so he became a paperback writer. Ben’s early pen names include Ben Elliott (his grandmother’s maiden name), who wrote Westerns for Ace; and Sam Webster, who wrote five books for Monarch. As Ken Barry he turned out racy paperback originals for Beacon with titles like The Love Itch and Executive Boudoir. But his agent was not happy about his decision to enter the western market, and suggested he represent himself on those sales. Ben had sent a trial novel to Harry Shorten of Tower Books. Ben’s family remembers it being A Hell of A Way to Die, written for Tower’s new Lassiter series. It was published in 1969, and editor Shorten told his new author to create a western series of his own. The result was Fargo.

The success of Fargo led to the Sundance series. Jim Sundance is a half-Cheyenne gunslinger who takes on the toughest jobs in order to raise funds to fight the corrupt Indian Ring back in Washington. The short-lived John Cutler series followed, and then perhaps Ben’s crowning achievement, the Rancho Bravo novels, published under the name Thorne Douglas.

Ben Haas died from a heart attack in New York City after attending a Literary Guild dinner in 1977. He was just fifty-one.

Fan favourite James Reasoner has hailed Ben as “one of the best action writers of all time”. In TWENTIETH CENTURY WESTERN WRITERS, David Whitehead wrote that Ben Haas “ranks among the most influential and under-rated Western writers of recent times… the hard-hitting adventures of Neal Fargo and Jim Sundance were largely responsible for creating the Western Series market virtually single-handed.”

Another action-packed FARGO adventure

John Benteen (aka, Ben Haas) knocked another one out of the park with this, the third installment of his long-running FARGO series. This time around, we find Neal Fargo - ex-soldier and Rough Rider, now mercenary adventurer and gun-for-hire - standing in as a Hollywood extra on the set of a Western film (a nice bit of self-referentialism here, I must say). Another old comrade of his got Fargo a bit part as a gunslinging heavy in a cowboy picture, but Fargo being Fargo, he turns down an offer by the filmmaker to get into the movie-making business full-time. Of course, he's also a little annoyed that he has to slow down his quick-draw so he doesn't pull faster than the hero of the picture, although the movie star who "kills" Fargo on-camera later asks him to demonstrate how to perform some fancy pistol tricks, rolling and spinning a Peacemaker in a way that'll please the crowds.

However, the pistol-spinning comes to an abrupt halt when Jane Deering, a young and sexy Hollywood starlet, drops by looking to invite Fargo to her home later that night to discuss business (and have sex). Fargo of course accepts, since the only thing he enjoys more than making money and shooting guys in the face is having sex with gorgeous women. Deering has a simple business proposition for Fargo - travel to Alaska and acquire confirmation that her estranged husband is dead. Deering is savvy enough to understand that Hollywood (even circa 1914) is just a meat grinder for talent: young, beautiful, naive people go in, and come out prematurely aged, washed-up and kicked out to pasture as the studios move on to the next big name. But Deering's husband was wealthy, and if she can find proof of his death somewhere in the wilds of the great white north, she will inherit his fortune. Fargo agrees to take on this assignment, although he is reluctant to bring Deering along with him, since she insists she's as tough and capable as any man.

What follows is a great action-adventure story set in the wild and unruly world of early 20th century Alaska. I was especially eager to read this particular novel because, as a native-born Alaskan myself, I was curious to see how Benteen (Haas) portrayed the territory and its people in these largely lawless, pre-statehood days. Overall, I wasn't disappointed. Even today, Alaska is a place for the independent of mind and spirit, for people who are self-reliant and take satisfaction from being in control of as much of their lives as one can be in the 21st century. But a hundred years ago, it really was one of the last North American frontiers, a place where the unwary could be killed by the savage winter cold or the teeth and claws of even more savage predators, by knife or gun or whiskey bottle or icy stream.

The extraordinarily dangerous environment is well-envisioned in this novel, but equally impressive is the amount of action and intrigue that takes place in the story. I won't give away any spoilers, except to say that Fargo and Deering stumble into a situation much more deadly than they'd ever imagined. There are a number of good fights in this book, from fists to knives to pistols and rifles, and of course Fargo's infamous double-barreled shotgun gets a good workout. There is a large battle at the end of the book that feels like something out of the battle for Berlin, 1945. In fact, the only criticism of the book I might have is that the final battle is a little TOO huge and bloody - but of course, that's just crazy talk.

If you've made it to Alaska Steel, you're no doubt a Fargo fan like myself, so I know I don't have to sell you on it, but rest assured, this is another excellent volume in what has quickly become one of my favorite action-adventure series. Pick it up, because you won't be disappointed.

Fornication and gun play

Fargo is hired to locate a woman's husband up in the wilderness of Alaska. No problem until the wife decides she must travel along. The woman is man hungry and soon the duo are going at it like ruttin bucks. On the steamer, in a cave, in a hotel, in a one room shanty, the fornication pauses long enough for Fargo to blast a couple no good nix, finds the boss man in the little Alaskan town where husband was last seen, get beat up and hauled out into the wilderness with only his long John's on. Finally meets the missing man, hears a strange story from him, then turns around, and with an army of miners, ride into town to settle a score. after copious amount of bullets have flown, it's back to fornication. Not nearly as death defying as the Panama adventures in book 2.

wonderful book

This book is one of the very best I have read to explain the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Wilcox is an excellent public speaker and writes just as well. He gives examples and stories that help one to relate to the different aspects of the Atonement. It is not just for teens--it really is for everyone; though most of his stories are of college students or teens he has worked with. I gave this as a graduation gift this year to my Sunday School class (18 year olds) and my hope is that they WILL read it and apply the Atonement in their lives.

This a great book to help teens understand the Atonement in their terms. Its set up as a lesson with questions and study plan. Great for the grand kids Sunday School classes. We got a copy for each child in the class we teach. A worthwhile purchase.

Understand the Atonement on a deeper level with clear teachings and excellent examples

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the new book, The Continuous Atonement for Teens by Brad Wilcox. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is central to my belief in the gospel and understanding how the atonement works in my life has made all the difference for me, especially over the past two years. I have went through some rough times and relied on the Lord to get me through. I've seen how putting my trust and faith in Him has made it possible for me to continue, keep moving forward, even when times are tough.

The reason I love The Continuous Atonement for teens is because Brad Wilcox explains the principles of the atonement and how it works in clear context. He gives excellent examples, inspiring stories, and so much hope for this gift that we've been given. I have marked several passages in my book and I'm so glad that I have this so that my own children can read it and understand how grace and works make the gospel what it is and how the atonement is for ALL of us ALL the time.

I'm grateful that His grace is sufficient for me and that through His atonement I can continue to move forward and learn all that I need to while on this earthly sojourn.

A profoundly moving read

Let me say up front that I normally avoid books like the Soloist. When I picked it up, however, and started glancing through it I became hooked and couldn't really put it down. Is it a page turner? Not really. For me I became entangled with Steve Lopez, the author, and Nathaniel Ayers the focus of the book and simply had to see how the book ended.

Steve Lopez, a reporter for the LA Times, accidently hears violin music coming, apparently from nowhere. When he investigates he finds Nathaniel, an obviously down and out and homeless individual playing what is essentially a broken instrument. Intrigued, Steve Lopez becomes wrapped up in a mission to lift Nathaniel out of his obvious difficulties. Steve learns that Nathaniel was a former Juilliard student and a gifted musician. He was also suffering from mental illness (schizophrenia) leaving him basically disfunctional.

Throughout The Soloist the reader rides heavy seas with highs full of hope and then lows filled with disappointment and dispare. Through Nathaniel's story we see the value of the human spirit. Through the actions of Steve Lopez we see that a simple act of kindness and humanity is never wasted, regardless of our motives.

Steve Lopez is a wonderful writer and his story is worth your time to read.

Beethoven in Pershing Park

In a neglected corner of L.A.'s Pershing Park stands a statue of Beethoven, hat and cane clasped behind his back. The minute Nathaniel Anthony Ayers laid eyes on it, he knew he'd landed in the right city. Los Angeles. The City of Beethoven.

Ayers, in his mid-50s, is a Julliard-trained bass player whose future as a musician crashed and burned when he suffered a psychotic breakdown midway through his studies in the early 1970s. The crack-up was probably prompted by the intensely competitive Julliard atmosphere, but also by the stressful fact that Ayers was a black student on a nearly all-white campus. His professors thought him brilliant. But with the onset of mental illness (later diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia), Ayers dropped out of sight. Years later, he wound up in Los Angeles, discovered the statue of Beethoven (his musical hero), and settled down to a life in the streets where he serenaded passing traffic on a battered, two-stringed violin. Music was the abiding passion that kept him grounded. Music was the catalyst that brought beauty and peace to his frequently confused and always fragile world.

One day Steve Lopez, columnist for the "L.A. Times" and an engaging, insightful author, heard Ayers playing. Sensing a column topic, he struck up an acquaintance. The acquaintance unexpectedly blossomed into a friendship, and The Soloist is the story of that friendship. Lopez's sensitive memoir spotlights the disorientation of schizophrenia, the perils of living on the streets, and the difficulty in achieving recovery. But in telling Ayers' story, Lopez also reminds us that the mentally ill and the homeless possess dignity, a fierce need for autonomy, and a hunger for meaning and beauty in their lives. In the process, Lopez also has some telling things to say about the scandalous fact that most major U.S. cities contain Skid Rows in which the most vulnerable of our citizens are segregated; some much-needed observations, given our pharmaceutical-crazy, quick-cure ethos, about patience, respect, and compassion when it comes to therapy (his mentor in this regard is Dr. Mark Ragins, a genuine pioneer in recovery therapy); and some extraordinarily important things to say about the redemptive power of music.

Lopez's memoir of his friendship with Ayers never falls into a feel-good sentimentality. Ayers may heal to a certain extent, but it's unlikely that he'll ever recover and he certainly has his bad, disoriented, full-of-rage days. As Lopez learned, progress in treating mental illness is never linear. But Ayers now lives in an apartment instead of on the street; he's happily making music on a variety of instruments in his own studio; and he knows that he's loved. Lopez, in turn, confesses that he frequently felt burdened, helpless, frustrated, and on one occasion when Ayers melted down, betrayed. But he also discovered that his friendship with Ayers enriched him: "I know that through [Ayers'] courage and humility and faith in the power of art--through his very ability to find happiness and purpose--he has awakened something in me...it's not a stretch to say that this man I hoped to save has done as much for me as I have for him" (p. 268).

A magnificent story about two really quite extraordinary men. Highly, unreservedly, recommended.

Inspirational story -- showing the power of friendship and music

My name is Joseph Russo -- I am one of Nathaniel's Juilliard friends mentioned in this book. I believe this book should be a "must read" for anyone who would like to more fully understand (and be affected by) the power of music and the importance of friendship....as well as the meaning of happiness and joy. It is a wonderful and ongoing story...Steve Lopez is an excellent writer befriending my dear friend Nathaniel who is a kind and wonderful person and extremely talented musician. You may want to read this book before you see the movie -- due out later this year.

GREAT FOR QUICK REFERENCE

Organized into GI, Endocrine, Urologic, Immune, Musculoskeletal, CNS, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Sensory and an Index in back.
They are also grouped by color. You can pull out the tab to the system which lists each drug and which card number to pull out (remember there are 2 sides! You can reorganize them by number, color and system.
Pretty neat and quick reference. I am going to list what is on the actual card. This way it will help you decide whether to purchase or not.
Example: Pulled out tab for Immune, looked up Rifampin (TB treatment), ok card 85 (Antitubercular Anti-infectives), on that card is Rifampin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol, and Pyrazinamide and their trade names. Flip card over and lists:
Therapeutic/Pharmacologic Class: Antitubercular/bacteriostatic;bacteriocidal anti-infectives
Indication: First-line therapy of active TB; in combination with other agents. Multidrug regimen prevents resistance. Preventive treatment (exposed to active TB) may be accomplished with monotherapy.
Action: Inhibits mycobacterial cell wall synthesis and interferes with metabolism; one first-line drug interferes with RNA transcription. Bactercidal/bacteriostatic action.
Adverse Reactions/Side Effects: EENT: The drug that begins with "e" causes eye problems (optic neuropathy). Does not specify which S/E for which drug.
Keep in Mind section of card: Be aware that urine may change color ("r" drug = red). ***This was on my final! Except the questions was what should the nurse tell the client about Rifampin, the answer was turns urine orange was correct choice on my final!!***
Make The Connection: Monitor CBC with differential, LFT and uric acid levels. Therapy will continue until 2 sputum samples for AFB are negative. etc......

Nursing students best friend...."flash cards"

After I failed my first pharm test......I purchased these cards and they were helpful. With the help of the flash cards and hard work I got an A on the next test. I am now at an 94% class percentage in my Nursing Pharmacology class. The color codes were the biggest help.

informative, condensed, convinient but did not have have info about what drugs are what receptor-specific, for ex. atenolol v.s propranolol. Also cards do not mention pregnancy category or pediatric use.

Excellent collection of stories

I found myself thinking about these stories long after I'd read them--Murphy's attention to physical detail builds atmosphere in a way that almost seems to be incidental to the story until that moment when it all falls together. Even the characters we don't much like come to life in a way that makes them matter to us.

A Fascinating Collection of Stories

Overall, an interesting collection of short stories. Many of the stories are dialogue focused, with the author slipping an astounding array of details into minute observations. The characters themselves all have an intense realism about them: they are people we might meet, even when the structures in which they find themselves lie outside typical reality. As to the plot lines, they can seem mundane on the surface. A brother and sister talking at a coffee shop, a gamer going on a date with a model; due to this, some of the endings may seem somewhat anticlimactic. However, if one looks deeper, each plot reveals a hidden layer of social interaction. With this in mind, each ending becomes a fascinating finish that leaves one pondering long after they finish reading.

what it means to be human

Having studied literature in college and in graduate school, I am, admittedly, a fiction snob. I enjoy a broad range of literature, from Carver to Hemingway, King to Alexie. Upon reading Murphy’s collection of stories, I was extremely impressed. I can’t recall the last time I read a collection that covered such a broad range of voice, time, emotion, and character—in short, the human experience. I love that the stories manage to cover such broad perspectives and experiences. There is definitely something for every reader in this collection. I can’t wait to read the next publication!

About the Author
Ms. Medina has devoted her life to the emergence of the Feminine in the lives of women and men. She has integrated the Feminine perspective in her psychotherapeutic practice, and through community development with a focus on environmental justice. After graduating from Colorado State University with a BS in psychology and earning a Master’s degree in Counseling from Arizona State University, Ms. Medina trained in Process-oriented Psychology, with an emphasis in Jungian Psychology, in Zurich, Switzerland. As the Alamosa Riverkeeper, she received the David Getches Flowing Waters Award for improving environmental water resources and recreational values in the Alamosa River through her efforts in collaboration, innovation and inspiration. Cindy treasures solitude that is often interrupted by owls hooting from the cottonwood trees, by coyotes howling from the Alamosa River, and by irrigation water flowing through the acequia (dirt ditch).

I am taking my time in reading this book, immersing myself in the author's reality, her struggles and insights. I'm finding that issues are surfacing, challenging me to once again examine them, relying on the strength and intuitive wisdom provided by the feminine archetype of the Black Madonna. Today's world would have us believe that we can do and be any and all things to everyone. As Ms.Medina so eloquently describes her struggles as a young wife, mother and professional, we are reminded each of us can only be the very best version of our authentic Self. Thank you for taking us on this beautiful journey.

Through Ms. Medina's sharing of her relationship with the Black Madonna we are given a beautiful road map in trusting our inner wisdom and the call to Spiritual Activism. I loved the honesty of her writing. It is refreshing to read the true challenges involved when answering this call from Spirit. This book is a must read for anyone trying to find their way through the challenges of community work, relationship work and honestly, being a human being on this planet. Thank you Ms. Medina!

Ms. Medina's book was enlightening, inspirational and at times, humorous. Ms. Medina possesses an innate talent to engage the reader with her descriptive writing. I am confident that Ms. Medina's book has provided me with the tools necessary to develop a deeper relationship with Christ and His mother. I was also intrigued with Ms. Medina's interpretation of dreams. Her tenacity to protect our land and water from pollution is both admirable and courageous.

For the beginning philosopher

I took an introductory philosophy course and it required this book. I agree with most of the other helpful reviews that this book is a good introduction to philosophy. This is not to say that the opinions of the authors does not come through to the reader. Throughout the chapter, the authors present and challenge view after view before concluding with their own understanding of the topic. It did seem that they wanted to convince you of their side by presenting it in this way.

I enjoyed reading the book regardless, and it wasn't because I wholly agreed with them. I thought it was a fast and easy read, and it took me step by step on how they came to their conclusions.

A great way to "Do" philosophy!
I picked up this older version for nearly free and I just started reading from the beginning.
The examples from movies like "The Matrix," and other thought experiments make the reading fun and relate to our times.

this is a very interesting philosophy textbook, as of 2010 it is up to date. i got this for my philosophy 101 class. it is easy to read, easy to understand. i will definitely be keeping this book.
