A good book to have in elementary school libraries. Should be used to expose all children to other cultures.

Writer has no clue on Cyrus!

I am sad to say that the author has no clue on Iranian history and Cyrus the Great.
In fact he says that " Cyrus was not Iranian but a true Persian". I have news for him: Persian are Iranians! In fact Persian were just one of several Iranian Tribes. Medes are also Iranian. To make things worst, this author writes about khomeini in the book!! Also tries to compare Cyrus the Great with Alexander (whose empire fell apart after his death!!).

Iran is over 7000 years old and has always been called "Iran" -Land of the Aryans. Persia is just one tribe that the West concentrates on.

The standard for MSE books.

Taking a materials science/mechanical engineering course that uses this book and I love it.

Very clear writing/explanations, use of intuitive notation, problems gradually get tougher at a reasonable rate. Although my area is more in control systems, this MSE book has been really interesting. I'd take another course in it if I had time.

Book definitely assumes you have the prerequisites though -- some of the math can get tricky, but's all reasonable for an undergrad. Excellent colors/visually appealing. I think MSE is a very visual subject, and since I'm not a visual person, it really helps to see what's going on with clear diagrams/pictures.

My professor said this is a classic MSE book and I can see why. Two thumbs up.

Covers all the Material you need

This book covers everything you'll want to know for the foundation of material science and engineering. Great book that explains the concepts well and efficiently. I've gone to this book several times for covering topics I didn't cover in class, and the book did a great job of catching me up. I even used this for other classes like Fluid Mechanics or Heat Transfer. It's got it all. The example problems, while sometimes basic, provided you a great way to know if you understand the (wait for it....) material!

Love this book

I sold my newer edition and got an older edition (costs less money). This book has great detail and great at explaining things. I am a materials engineer and this is by far my most referenced book for a jumping off point. If you are unclear about something, I would start with this book and it will provide general details. After that, you can use resources that are more focused on a certain subject. I use it to refresh on basic ideas all of the time. This book provides such a strong foundation you would be crazy not to have it on your book shelf for reference if you do anything really materials oriented.

Excellent Resource for Intercultural Trainers

"Beyond Experience" is a book full of different activites to be used in an intercultural training session. One of its very useful features is a full outline of a training design, with timeframe included, which incorporates the activities mentioned in subsequent pages. Trainers with more experience can use this as a base, bringing in other relevant material.
The training activities described tend to fall more on the "culture-general" instead of "culture-specific" side, and are mainly designed for U.S. participants who are planning on traveling or living abroad, or are in contact with other cultures in the United States. The activities are also mainly for those who have limited exposure to other ways of thinking and perceiving the world. Through examining U.S. proverbs and the values that are held by the participants, the aim of the activities is to challenge assumptions and pave the way for a more successful intercultural experience.

Mixon writes about the work of making fiction with clarity, intelligence, and an abundance of warm, conspiratorial humor. She's on your side. Every theory is packed with examples. Complex topics are broken into pithy lists--without sacrificing wisdom. Only one problem: I kept having to put the book down to pin quotes to the wall.

What Authors Need to Know About Writing--and About Life as an Author

For us seasoned writers, Victoria tells us things we know on some level, but her putting it into words validates it, as I told her. SECRET ADVICE is just that, and if you’ve read ART & CRAFT OF WRITING STORIES, it reiterates a few gems in there, about plotting, hook, climax, exposition, etc. Victoria also gives advice that helps us authors away from the keyboard, too, such as ‘spend one day…’ being a troll, being silent, as a student of reality, with song lyrics, doing research, watching children, crying, laughing and being grateful. It’s all part of the author’s life. I highly recommend this along with ART & CRAFT OF WRITING STORIES, as they complement each other very well, and give us some very necessary overlaps. I’d also advise us all to read these books before starting to write our next book, so keep it on the shelf, or handy on your Kindle reader!

There's a lot of good advice and the 'short and sweet' format is easy to understand because of the examples she gives. A person could peruse her site and find the info, but why spend so much time searching when it's all condensed in this short book.

About the Author
Ray Kroc was an American businessman most famous for founding McDonald's at the age of fifty-two. Widely regarded as one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the twentieth century, Kroc was unfailingly motivated, and continued to evolve and adapt his business practices up until his death to make McDonald's the worldwide phenomenon it is today. He died in California in 1984.

Devoured in one day

I devoured this thing in a single day; it's easily written, in a folksy English - something that I found interesting as a small trip back to the '80s (though arguly to even before that as he grew up in the Great Depression).

I found this book immensely interesting for two main points: 1) to get an inside view of what McDonald's thinks of McDonald's - especially with the largely negative view I would say the public has for this food chain; and 2) given that it's an autobiography - to see the first hand account of one of our greater rags to riches stories and the man who really did create a new industry.

It's a fast paced story told marvelously - and I never found myself bored or skipping pages...until at least the very end when he went into detail regarding his time with the baseball team.

It will be interesting having read this, to compare against the story that will be told in the upcoming film 'The Founders', the John Lee Hancock film about the founding of McDonald's. I wish there was a more updated and more unbiased look into this story, as I'm sure that a book written 30 years after the fact (and by the founder no less) would be subject to some factual nuances.

But in the end, I found it quite inspiring to look into his life - to learn and understand how he really did have to 'grind it out' to even get to the point of understanding the future surrounding the McDonald's brothers' premise.

HE HAD IT HIS WAY

A must read for all entrepreneurs. Certainly not as detailed as the biography written by Love, This autobiography of Ray Kroc is both entertaining and insightful. What he did prior to the inspiration of McDonalds across the world led up to this multi-national business of great impact and success. I think you will enjoy the insights from a man borne circa 1900 and how he was led to his position of prominence and wealth. I would read the autobiography first and then the biography written by Love secondly. This is a man who would not compromise the values of his employees nor his customers. And he used the KISS system to run and control his franchisees .He and Sam Walton had similar objectives and goals. And their outcomes were similar. Would make for a great How To book. And the rest is history. And success stories are so darn good reading that you won't be able to put these books down for long and you will recommend them to every business person you know. Good reading.

Piano player in a bordello and a lifelong Cubs fan -- top THAT Sam Walton!

I'll start by saying that I read this book at the same time I read the autobiography of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. Ray Kroc and Sam Walton were business contemporaries, although obviously plying their trade in different industries. Walton was the Midwestern/Southern uber-WASP who attended church every Sunday, loved to quail hunt, actively participated in the local Chamber of Commerce, was an Eagle Scout, etc. You get the picture. On the other hand, Kroc (also a Midwesterner) was a high school dropout who once landed a gig playing piano in a bordello. Ray Kroc was married three times, swore with the best of them, drank with the boys, and generally led a colorful life. So if you buy Grinding It Out, be prepared to meet an extremely earthy character!

I just love this book because you get a real feel for who Ray Kroc was as a person. The book is breezy, chatty, a super easy read that is packed with fascinating anecdotes. The parts about Kroc's dealings with the McDonald brothers out of San Bernardino (via New Hampshire, of all places!) are just terrific.

To me, when a book is informative, fun and genuinely inspirational, you've got a winning combination -- and that is what you have in Grinding It Out.
