Jeremiah Johnson was a wimp!

The movie "Jeremiah Johnson" found some of its inspiration and history in the true life adventures of John "Liver-Eatin'" Johnston. As tough as Jeremiah was, he can barely hold a candle to the tough mountain man who ate the livers of his vanquished foes.

The feats of survival, tracking, and hunting boggle the mind. While the authors draw from oral history (and perhaps have been taken in with some broad embellishments), the remarkable vengeance Johnston extracts from the Crow tribe for the death of his wife and unborn child is staggering. The Crows, troubled by Johnston's relentless vengeance, dispatch 20 warriors on a mission to find and kill the tribe's nemesis. Over a period that spanned over a decade the solitary Crows fall to Johnston. He killed them all.

This is not a book for the politically correct...the book originally appeared in the 1940s. Don't expect to confront descriptions of other races that include hyphens.

For those who have read the Dan O'Brien books, THE CONTRACT SURGEON and THE INDIAN AGENT, there is a reference to Valentine T. McGillycuddy. For fans of the HBO Original Series DEADWOOD, "Colorado" Charlie Utter warrants several mentions.

An interesting read for those who harbor any admiration for the real pioneers.

When men were men...

I suppose that most people find their way to this book through the movie,Jeremiah Johnson. It is a great film and one of Redford's best.
The book is a fascinating look at the real life model for Jeremiah Johnson, John Johnston. His story is essentially compiled from the oral tradition of the old west augmented by interviews with people who knew Johnston (or alleged to know him.)
Some of the stories are fantastic and should be taken with a grain of salt but it does suggest that only a very unusual(and dangerous)individual succeeded as a mountain man. The romantic notion of the old west is replaced by an environment that is hostile and unforgiving. The map provided is hand-drawn but gives a sense of what must have been involved for settlers attempting to cross that portion of the country.
I enjoyed this small volume very much and found it ironic that Johnston wound up being buried in a cemetery in Los Angeles (what an insult!)

A Good Read.

Regardless of whether it is truth, legend, fiction, or myth, Crow Killer is a good read for those interested in the old west and the life of the mountain men. Much better and bigger than the movie (just as Johnson was much bigger than Redford) with vivid action and great descriptions of the times. Some people seem concerned with the lack of documentation, however word of mouth and story telling were the documentation methods of the times for red and white men alike. A good read. If you liked the movie you'll enjoy the book.

A selection for anyone who wants to learn about jetmodels.

I had always been in the dark when it came to jet engines, and with one of my phD siblyings only telling me little of what I really wanted to know, I asked a some modelers what book they would recomend to get started. Each pointed to Kurt Schreckling's book and now I point to it as well. He gives a basic introduction into thermaldynamics and other information that is needed to understand the "why's" of the book, but always keeping in mind teh truth that most people who read it are not enginers or physics majors. The book also gives explainations of the asembly prossess the tools one would need, the parts, and in the back of the book: the plans. The book cold almost be called "The Jetmodelers Cook Book"

Good little book

Overall this is a good book on the basic theory and construction of a model gas turbine and I would recommend it to others with a similar interest. The book looks a little thin, but it is packed with lots of good information in small print.

I could not give the book 4 stars because there are problems with the type setting of the equations. If you already have some mathematical and engineering experience, you can probably figure out what is intended. Otherwise some of the equations could be a little confusing.

Great Text

I bought this book as it was required for my master's degree Intro to Geochemistry course. That being said, this book is well-written and is straight-forward to understand (my background is chemistry and I could follow the geology-oriented sections well). The figures in the text are excellent, clear to understand, and descriptive. I've read many textbooks that have horrible and confusing figures; this book is not one of them. The only downside is I am a visual person and all figures/photos are in black and white. I solved this dilemma by "googling" specific rocks or topics to gain color photos available on the internet. Lastly, this author uses in-text references a lot, which may be distracting for some, but I found to be helpful if you wanted to learn more about a specific topic without using the index. Overall an excellent text!

I always said I wasn't going to review this series because it has no words, so you're really left with not a lot to talk about. However, I caved in when it got to Insects because, if a series gets that esoteric, it pretty much has to be popular. I mean, not only was it the only book on that subject (exclusively) I've seen, but it's not exactly first-choice, is it? So here we have people. They must have done that one before, surely? Or was is a morning-after editorial meeting? " No, we've got to do the insects first." "Have you been watching Dr Who again?" "Yes, MALCOLM TUCKER!!!"* (Sorry, but I really am excited about this). For those of you who don't know, the stock-in-trade of this series is a single page which starts off with the simplest outlines, then builds up a basic shape and works it, in six steps, into a finished drawing. For a subject as complex as the human figure, that does mean there's an awful lot left out and some pretty giant leaps of the imagination, but it does work surprisingly well. If your main problem is getting started, then this is definitely the book for you and Susie does a fantastic job of choosing exactly which stages to illustrate so that you do get a genuine feeling of progression rather than giant steps. The only fly in the ointment is that I wish each demonstration had stopped at the fifth stage, the finished drawing, because these are in every case beautiful and sensitive works in pencil that need no further embellishment. The series, however, demands a colour finale and this is done by adding (what I think is) a completely unnecessary wash that covers the pencil lines and makes the whole thing, in almost all cases, look heavy and clumsy. I don't think it's a problem with Susie's work with a wash, I just think it doesn't work with what's gone before. A couple of examples. There's a woman sitting knitting. Perfectly fine in the drawing, but the colour wash leaves a chair she'll fall off if she moves and which doesn't look strong enough to support its own weight, let alone hers. And the man with the stick. I'm sorry, but that thing is two inches in diameter, it's nearly as thick as his arm! This is a quibble, but I do think it's best to ignore stage six and just stop at five. Treat this as what it claims to be, a book about drawing and put your paint box away. You get a fantastic variety of figures and poses, both static and in motion and a stripped-down approach that simply dissolves so much of the mystique that always surrounds figure drawing. * Peter Capaldi, Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It, was announced as the new Dr Who yesterday.-Artbookreview.net Susie Hodge shows us how to draw people in this new addition to the How to Draw series. Beautiful coffe table book

'Ancient Captials of Thailand' describes the old important cities and captials of Southern Thailand. These include Sukothai, Ayuthaya, Kampeng and several other cities. The book is beautifully illustrated with more than 350 photographs. It also provides site maps and descriptions of the different places and the major temples and structures. Thus, it's not just a 'picture book", but I can recommend this book both for content and quality of the pictures. The book does not cover the cities of the Northern Kingdoms (e.g., Lanna), this is supposed to be the topic of another book.
