EVERY Organization with Confluence Wiki needs this book - or five!

This is a *must have* book for EVERY organization that is using or working with Confluence Wiki - regardless of whether you are a new user or many-years-old user. EVERY user will find very valuable insights in this book - and for the price, it is a steal. By *every user* - this means, engineering users, tech writers, marketing users, executive users - EVERY!

Simply, it is that rich!

I'd also argue that if you bought Confluence in the first place, the reason was because you wanted your organization to work better, be more collaborative, be more transparent, work in a central platform vs. old-school desktop applications, and ultimately - get more things done faster. That said, again - this is the tipster book of all time on the topic "Confluence Wiki" - way beyond strategic documentation.

This book is not a pitch to buy Confluence - this book assumes you already have it. Yet like most tools, having them and using them to their full strength is not usually the same thing, especially for an organizational-use tool. Instead, all too many users flail around, poking and prodding at the features, or doing the bare minimum, often without a plan, long learning curves, and certainly not optimized efforts.

And sometimes, even with a plan, when built without deep knowledge in advance, the plan is more controlling/damaging, then optimizing/grabbing the full potential of the platform, and more -- the potential of your community through viral adoption.

Sarah, as expert extraordinaire on the Confluence platform (rightfully so, given Atlassian's own amazing documentation set; Google search it!), takes the reader down the path of coveted "secrets" used by Atlassian tech writers for building strategic documentation, and a whole lot more.

Even though documentation is the premise of the book, I would argue that it is far more of an authoritative work on using Confluence smarter. Under the guise of the thesis instructions are a million-and-one other *extremely valuable* tips on every page - both at the tool level and why-psychology level - that extends this book's scope well beyond the documentation use case. Which, by the way - is also Confluence. Confluence is for documentation, and a whole lot more!

I have referred this book to two clients so far, and both came back two weeks later, with raving thank yous. Buy one, or five - and remove excuses in your org to work smarter, not harder.

Just what I needed

I'm sorry I did not have this book sooner, as it would have saved me a lot of research time. The section comparing the major wiki brands and describing what is best for an enterprise wiki was very useful.

About 60% of the book covers Confluence in depth and in many aspects, including planning, installation, third party add-ons.

There is excellent information on best practices around managing and using a wiki - any wiki. There is a lot of useful information on managing wiki content like... community contributed content, managing spam, crowd sourcing (the good and the bad), content reuse, and single source publication (the book was written on a wiki).

The author clearly has had many years of experience in all these issues, so it's very good to be able to access all this knowledge in one easy to read book.

Awesome Book But Not Just for Teams...

There are dozens of wikis out there, including the freebies from WikiMedia. Confluence costs between 10 and 50 bucks a month, and is supposedly "targeted" at team development and documentation (I know, duh, confluence means more than one, right?). But I'm begging to differ. I'm a lone ranger programmer, writer and consultant who uses Confluence all the time, all on my own! (Companies call these introverts individual contributors).

There are MANY times I find that a "lone" wiki (with all other editing privileges locked out) is of great value. Examples: 1. When developing with paid inputs, but wanting to edit those before posting (just like a blog approval). 2. Whan documenting your own software. 3. When developing a demo wiki to show a customer (eg. as a consultant), before the "team" jumps in. ETC.

If you want to learn all the major commands needed to create and edit your own wiki, just go to wikipedia and search - link to Wiki markup. (That's what Wikipedia calls the internal syntax). All the links are there for this relatively simple code. You can get a free copy from wikimedia put on your godaddy or nsi shared server.

But confluence takes wikis a huge step farther with some really helpful templates and patterns not yet active on wikimedia releases, and though they are ostensibly to enhance communication, just pretend you have a split personality-- and the communication is with your customers, friends, consultants, prospects and other stakeholders, and you'll find Confluence is ideal, trumping the free wikis on many fronts. Atlassian support also is legendary, and as a lone contributor, their "team" (say you install a wiki at a high school) becomes an extension of your work-- that doesn't happen in the wonderful but vast universe of open source.

I've read dozens of books online and in print about Confluence, including Atlassian's own wonderful documentation and tutorials, and without hesitation recommend chocolate as THE PREMIER confluence book. It WILL also help you with other wikis, but the focus is on the many extraordinary features of Confluence, even as an individual contributor or technical writer/ programmer, including using a copy all for yourself. The book goes from the 30,000 foot strategy/acceptance/ teamwork view (which I don't care about as much, lotus notes on steroids) to the very detailed code and implementation steps (ideal for me). For background, I've developed over 3000 wikis in the last 10 years on all the major platforms, especially in technical education, and have recommended Confluence to many a client. When I build a demo, I usually do it alone, so my "copy" is, well, mine.

Tip: one of my best "apps" for this program is online classes and tutorials. The student/teacher collaboration, especially on projects, makes this a wonderful tool. I did one on postgrad unmanned navigational robotics and the confluence wiki morphed into a resource adoped school wide. Of course software documentation is where this really shines, and if you dabble in Domain Specific Languages as I do, there is no better tool out there, XML notwithstanding. I'm hoping Atlassian considers adding SCORM capabilities (XML tags) as Unity has, for those more and more frequent government funded programs!

The temperature of that water was probably between ten or eleven degrees.

At a little after midnight on July 15, 2007, Lewis Gordon Pugh stood on the edge of the sea ice at the North Pole. It was the fifteenth anniversary of his father’s death and he was wearing just a Speedo swimsuit, the old-fashioned one that barely covers all that needs to be covered. Air temperature at the North Pole that night was below zero, the water into which he was about to plunge was minus 1.7 although this was no in-and-out dip into the world’s coldest water. Pugh was about to swim one kilometre across the North Pole and the thought did cross his mind that he might die.

If you had been alongside Professor Tim Noakes who stood in a small Zodiac boat supervising Pugh’s swim, you would have seen something truly startling. One of the world’s most eminent exercise physiologists, Noakes was looking at a computer screen hooked up to a thermometer on the swimmer’s body. What the screen told the scientist was in the minutes before the swim was to commence, Pugh’s core body temperature was rising significantly.

More or less naked, standing on ice in freezing temperatures at the North Pole and yet his body was heating up. Is it any wonder they called him ‘The Human Polar Bear?’ Noakes, who had never encountered this phenomenon before working with Pugh, came up with a scientific term for it, ‘anticipatory thermogenesis.’ Without it, Pugh wouldn’t have stood a chance of swimming a kilometre in those Arctic waters. With it, he was still dicing with death.
What scared him was the depth of the water, he would sink over four kilometres before reaching the bottom. Drowning was a possibility because hypothermia creeps up on the cold-water swimmer, pressing on his respiratory channels, denying muscles oxygen, until there is no power to fight, limbs go limp, swimmer disappears. Pugh would do the swim without harness or rope and if it went wrong, his body would not be recovered.

Why was he prepared to do it?

That is a remarkable story and, ironically, extraordinary testimony to one man’s belief in life. Yes Lewis Pugh wants to help protect the most wonderful places on the planet, yes he wants us to reverse the damage we have done to our environment and yes he has given up everything to dedicate his life to this purpose. And it is not like he feels he is wasting his time.

Lewis Pugh spent the first ten years of his life in England, the next 17 in South Africa, and since then has lived in both countries, not forgetting great times spent in Norway. He is a maritime lawyer by training and a pursuer of dreams by inclination. There wasn’t an ocean or a sea that he didn’t want to swim, nor a mountain he didn’t want to climb and it was no surprise to him when he quit his well-paid lawyer’s job in the City of London for a life more interesting.

He spent five years in the British SAS, devoted his free time to preparing for and swimming in the world’s most hostile places; the North Cape, the Antarctic, the North Pole and developed an understanding of the beauty, the preciousness and fragility of life and its many eco-systems. Driven by nothing more than deep belief, he has achieved things most would regard as impossible. He doesn’t tell us what we must do but shows shows what can be done.

The challenges are enormous, tough laws will have to be passed, but when you have read Lewis Pugh’s remarkable story, you will understand that now, more than ever, is the time for us to realize it is possible to achieve the impossible.

Lewis's book is a fabulous read. I couldn't put it down. It is about one inspired and courageous man who followed his dreams, overcame huge obstacles along the way and has accomplished more than most people could in two lifetimes. I can't recommend his book highly enough.

Lewis is an amazing man!

I could go on and on about what the book says. Let's put this in perspective though. Lewis Pugh has done some of the most remarkable challenges on the earth. He is an amazing person also. Its always a great thing when you have someone who is much more of a remarkable person over their athletic ability. It doesn't happen often!

I would suggest this book for anyone. You do not have to be a sports enthusiast or a swimmer, or any outdoors nut. If you enjoy inspirational reading or feel you need inspiration, look up Lewis Pugh for any of his works from public speeches to this particular book.

So it more than a little surprising that Lewis Gordon Pugh managed to swim one kilometre over the top of the earth. That is 40 lengths of a school pool. Imagine swimming 40 length's in water that is minus 1.7 degrees. (Because of the salt in the sea, the water at the poles is well below freezing). It is impossible.

"Achieving the Impossible" is an extraordinary book. Firstly, because the title is actually valid. Also, it is well written and constructed. Lewis is honest and real. I think that is why I found it compelling. So many autobiographies are just catalogues of conquests. It's like they're written by publicists and sycophants. Those authors have clearly never asked hard, real, questions of themselves and others. But Lewis has. And he tells you all about it. From kicking an Australian in the balls (a unique South African prerogative, it seems) to the realities of elitist schooling, to the real gut wrenching answer to Prince Charles' question about pain. One of my favourite sections is the SAS training, a strange, hidden world, described with characteristic honesty. Lewis clearly relates much better to his fellow SAS candidates than to his corporate colleagues. In fact, he explicitly admires particular SAS candidates and "staff" and tries to live up to their dedication, integrity, courage and commitment. But he also describes an incident where some SAS candidates were so selfish it nearly killed him. It is what I love about this book. It does not distort for idealism. Because it is real it is interesting.

One of the greatest things in life is to do something worthwhile and then acknowledge your team: the people, without whom, it couldn't have happened. Another truly great thing is to find your purpose in life. Lewis's purpose actually finds him, as he swims over a whale graveyard in Antarctica, and also witnesses first-hand the year on year degradation of the polar ice. Purpose, teamwork, achievement. These three things make for a fascinating and inspiring read. It is a really good book. I highly recommend it.

Compelling and uplifting, `Achieving the Impossible' is the exhililraing story of resilience and ultimate triumph of a courageous man who followed his dreams to achieve what no other human being has.

From the moment you start reading the book you become part of the story. It is written in such a way that the reader becomes one with the story and as the author gets ready to take the plundge into the dark waters of Antartica you can almost feel your heart beating faster too as you anticipate his body hitting the icy waters.

Its been a long time since I picked up a book a book and read it from start to end without putting it down, but I found myself doing exactly this with 'Achieving the Impossible.' It is such an interesting read that you just can't stop reading cause if you do, you might just miss out.

In a world where we're faced with so many negative stories on a daily basis, this book is truly a breath of fresh air and it will leave you feeling motivated and inspired. Above all gives you hope and makes you realize, like the author you too can achieve anything if you just set your mind to it. I recommend this book as a must read, you don't know what it feels to be motivated until you have ready Lewis Pugh's `Achieving the Impossible'

Thankfully, organizational management theory guru Senge doesn't make the kind of simplistic prescriptions for improving schools that often come from the business community. At the heart of his handbook for educational change are the ideas Senge first articulated in The Fifth Discipline and subsequent books on building organizations where learning can thrive. His five key themes highlight the importance of developing realistic personal goals, establishing a shared vision, cultivating awareness of attitudes and perceptions, practicing positive group interaction and understanding interdependency and change, feedback and complexity. Although there aren't any genuine breakthroughs or original ideas here, the book succeeds in offering a compendium of useful concepts and innovative practices that may be of use to educators struggling to redefine themselves and their work during a time of rapid global and technological change. The book's broad sweep is both a strength and weakness. Some readers may be frustrated by the lack of depth and focus, though the book's helpful resource lists will steer them to other valuable sources. By popularizing ideas about learning theory, leadership, group dynamics and school/ community partnerships that are already accepted in much of the educational community, this handy volume may help parents better understand the struggles of educators to create dynamic and effective learning environments. Following the theory he began in The Fifth Discipline, Senge turns his attention this time from the business world to education in this fourth addition to his "Fifth Discipline Resource" series, so named because it focuses on a set of disciplines the author believes are key to organizational learning (personal mastery, shared vision, mental models, team learning, and systems thinking). But there is a special challenge when applying the five disciplines to our educational system. America has moved out of the Industrial Age, and so has the business world. Our educational system, however, has not. Senge argues persuasively that we must abandon Industrial Age assumptions about schools. This requires centering learning around the student instead of the teacher, discouraging "homogeneity," and getting away from rote memorization. In short, it means treating schools like living systems instead of machines. Senge suggests that the readers browse as needed, following the cross references scattered throughout the book, rather than reading it from cover to cover. While primarily of use to those within the educational system, this book will also be of interest to parents. Change in education is hard, but students would benefit from the suggestions here. A great resource book for educators

This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links. Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93).

The authors consider this book a "prequel" to their other books about learning organizations (p.7). That's true. Though this is the most recent book, you can start with this one and go on to the others for further depth. Some repetitions may only serve well for mastery.

The whole book is very readable and informative. Concepts are clearly explained. It follows the same excellent editing format as The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change.

When you get too enthused by so many ideas and success stories of innovations, heed the advice for "The Strategy of Organizational Change". "Focus on one or two new priorities for change, not twelve. Most school systems are already overwhelmed with change. They don't need a new initiative; they need an approach that consolidates existing initiatives, eliminates "turf battles," and makes it easier for people to work together toward common ends." (p.25)

There are just too many passages that you wish to quote. The book is a treasure mine. However, for those (esp. busy administrators) who find the volume too daunting or verbose (592 pages!) and still want to get a handle on launching into transforming their schools into learning organisations, I would recommend, "Ten Steps to a Learning Organization" and start with the simple questionnaire given there.

Oh, Mr. Kotter!

Whether we experienced our student life as "sweat hogs" or not, each of us have tales to tell of being forced to learn in spite of the schools we attended instead of because of them. If we counted how many "good" schools or teachers we experienced over our lifetimes, we could probably count them on one hand (or finger!). For an institution that plays such a significant part in our development, this is a terrible performance record.
With SCHOOLS THAT LEARN, Peter Senge (et al) legitimize the fieldbook format as an extremely effective teaching tool. Chocked full of examples, tools, theory, tips and traps to avoid, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN outlines an effective strategy for creating a powerful alliance between learners, schools, and communities. His is a call to action that must be heeded.
Readers will be informed, challenged to get involved, inspired, troubled, and made to see how important an issue lifelong learning is. Rather than seeking to place blame, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN simply acknowledge the "opportunities" that are before each of us. Senge then uses this "gap" between the desired state of learning and the current state to motivate readers to take action.
This is a book that should be on desk of every school administrator, teacher, parent and corporate training staff. The dialogue it will initiate has the potential to create, sustain and improve learning throughout all areas of our lives.

Helps Design the School of the Future

SCHOOLS THAT LEARN is both a visionary and practical guide for how schools must evolve to meet the needs of students in the next 20 years. The use of multiple authors and perspectives mirrors some of the changes our schools must make to meet the needs of a new age. As Professional Development Director at a diverse Jesuit high school in San Francisco, I recommend this book to any educator, K-college. Senge's work will help prepare students for an era requiring a strong traditional academic foundation coupled with the need for creativity, and the social, emotional, and intellectual skills to work in high performing teams needed to rebuild our world.
