At first glance, the Renaissance and the Reformation--two movements (one cultural, one religious) that defined Europe from 1400 to 1600--may appear to be polar opposites. The Renaissance found scholars and artists celebrating the beauty and splendor of the material world, while the Reformation saw Protestant and Catholic religious leaders and their followers focusing on eternal salvation. However, there were actually striking similarities between these two worlds. For instance, while both Renaissance artists and Reformation pastors originally desired a return to a "golden age" of the past, they both ended up creating something very new instead.
In The Renaissance and Reformation, Merry Wiesner-Hanks allows the historical participants to tell their own stories. She presents a mix of visual sources and written documents not only from learned scholars, trained artists, university-educated religious reformers, and powerful political leaders--but also from more ordinary men and women. Leonardo da Vinci considers the merits of painting versus poetry in his notebook, while the Italian diplomat Baldassar Castiglione recommends the pastime of music-making to gentlemen in his book The Courtier. A group of small-time investors signs a contract for a trading venture from Genoa to Corsica and Sardinia, and a wealthy Florentine widow writes a letter to her son, weighing his ability to start a new business. A picture essay uses individual and family portraits to discuss ideas about personality, temperament, and "genius"; social differences in marital patterns; and changes in family relationships. Wiesner-Hanks places events in Europe in a global context, allowing readers to examine the ways in which they were related to the voyages of exploration.

Admirably suited for its purpose.
By GWalker (ghwalker@aol.com)
Truly a shame that M. James chose to give a 2 star review merely because the book was ill-suited for his or her purpose, apparently for use in a college level course. This is part of a series designed and marketed for non-specialist students. Judging from the OUP website and the reviews quoted in many of the other volumes' Amazon listings, middle and high-schoolers as well as undergraduates seem to be the target audience.
So it didn't serve his or her purposes as a college text? Ok, not surprising, and a good caveat to note in a review, but absolutely no reason to give a low rating overall.
This may be "simplistic" for college students taking a course in Renaissance or Reformation studies, but this is remarkably in depth and comprehensive for the middle/high schooler, and due to the editing of the documents into, more or less, bite sized passages, far more likely to be actually read by secondary students than a conventional college level "reader." Moreover, the incorporation of both texts and visual images also serves to render the whole more palatable to the non-specialist.
While I haven't taught at the collegiate level, I suspect that there are more than a few students beginning their journey in history that would find the "highlights" compiled here to be a useful adjunct to the principal text in a survey course, granting exposure to original voices and images without discouraging the excursion by its own weight.
Is it better or worse than some other volume out there seeking to serve the same end? I don't know, I haven't come across such a book (and don't pretend to have conducted an exhaustive search for one), and thus, I normally wouldn't submit a review. But on its own terms, I believe it succeeds and hope that others contemplating the purchase won't be dissuaded by the fact that it may not be wholly appropriate for advanced scholars.

Too Simplistic
By M. James
This book is too simplistic and seems to be geared towards a 7-9th grade curriculum. If you are looking for a resource book for a class, this is not the book for you. To be honest, I found absolutely no use for it in my college curriculum.
