The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way.

Freelance journalist Knapp began drinking in her early teens and continued unabatedly until she "hit bottom" in 1995 and checked herself into a rehab at the age of 36. During that time she managed to graduate with honors from Brown and have a successful career as a journalist, and few people suspected she had a problem with the bottle. Here she recounts the years of denial that helped her rationalize the blackouts, innumerable hangovers, broken relationships and family tensions characteristic of the alcoholic's story. Knapp interweaves her personal history with factual information about alcohol abuse, including frequent references to the AA meetings she's attended. Here's a confession utterly devoid of self-pity, an extraordinarily lucid and very well-written personal account of a common addiction that is filled with insights as well as a comprehensive treatment of the subject. The text reproduces a questionnaire for alcoholism made up by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Knapp, a contributing editor for New Woman magazine and weekly columnist for the Boston Phoenix, has written a personal story of her journey through the maze of alcoholism. Because Knapp is a skilled writer, the engrossing and insightful story transcends the purely confessional tone and becomes of interest to many. One of Knapp's recurring themes concerns the denial that alcoholics practice before admitting their disease. Because she came from a middle-class home where drinking was practiced socially, and not from a place of "chaos and storm," she thought that "true alcoholics" were the "unstable and the lunatic." Gradually, she came to admit that she, too, was an alcoholic and with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous began her recovery. Overall, this book will comfort and sustain the recovering alcoholic while enlightening others who want to understand the psychological dependency involved in alcoholism. Heartbreakingly honest

A very powerful, personal love story of what it's like to be married to alcohol and then decide to divorce (to use the author's metaphor). It's beautifully written, was hard to put down, and has given me insight into what it's like to think alcoholically, which gives me a chance to practice more compassion and to offer more love to those who struggle with addiction. I feel very honored that the author shared her intimate story with us. What a privilege, and what a loss that she's no longer with us.

Makes you think, gives you hope

This wasn't an easy read for me, in the sense that I related so much to what Caroline was saying. Some days I would even read with a glass of wine, then 2 or 3, so difficult it was to accept that I, too might have a drinking problem. It truly is a journey you have to make one day at a time, one step at a time.

Praise from a recovering alcoholic male

I read this book initially as a practicing alcoholic in denial, and then in early recovery. I loved the book the first time recognizing the honesty and courage. The author's style was very pleasing. Now, I appreciate the honesty, courage, and accuracy. I go to A.A. meetings every day, and A.A. is my family now. I wondered, "What could this book offer that I wasn't already getting?" The fact is that this book offered wisdom I hadn't heard before, such as, in decision making, how to tell the difference between the alcoholic alternative and the better choice. I re-read this two days ago, and used it today. I won't spill the beans. You'll have to read the book to learn.
In A.A., sponsors are always the same sex as the sponsee. I wondered what insight I could get from a female alcoholic. I learned tht this is not an issue. I strongly recommend this book to everyone.

A Stand Out Series

I have really enjoyed Mr. Chesser's series so far (finished book 3).

There are some things that really stand out that make this different than many of the books out there. First, Mr. Chesser can write intelligently about the things that are happening, or exist, in his stories. Prime examples are his understanding of firearms and military equipment. I don't know if this is through personal experience, or through research, but too often you see minor giveaways in this genre that take away from the believability (such as a military person referring to a magazine as a "clip").

Second, he takes the time to develop charactors who he has every intention of killing off ASAP. This means, not every major charactor survives, and that is what we expect from a zom-poc.

There was only one thing that had me thinking..."Oh, come on...", but that happened in book 2, so I'll not bring it up here.

It's a must read!

Awesome read, can't get enough of the Delta Tier 1 operators, or the Omega infected populace. Strikes a nice balance between heavy action and thoughtful introspection. Great read!

Good read.

This was a good read especially for the price. I thought it was well written. This appears to be his first novel, but you wouldn't know that from reading the book. I didn't see any inaccuracies or anything that required me to suspend reality with the exception of people rising from the dead. But that is to be expected from the title of the book. If you like the zombie and/or the post apocalypse genre, you will like this book.

Psychotic, Neurotic and Individuating Families

What you may have long suspected, the research shows to be true: A good 70% of families in America are what is now popularly known as "dysfunctional" or worse; Intimate Worlds should be required reading for . . . . anyone in a family, that fundamental blueprint for life and society, for better or worse. Scarf poignantly shows how most of us could use a revised or entirely new blueprint to authentically thrive in life and pass healthy boundaries and life and relationship skills on to emotionally stable children. Psychoanalytically and sweetly eloquent, the dustcover flap (somewhat paraphrased below) says it well. A highly recommended landmark work.

~~ Scarf explores the many factors that go into the formation and functioning of a family, showing us the ways in which families actually operate, and how family life can be improved. About the Author

Marc isn't just great art he has the narrative chops

If Will Elder and Geof Darrow gave birth to a next generation underground artist with a fine art sensibility, then you might begin to describe the genius of Marc Bell. Primed by the stunning art of Hot Potatoes and prepped by Pure Pajamas, I still wasn't convinced that Marc could pull off a full length narrative. I was so wrong. At first I was a little concerned about the slightly stripped down art. I had grown used to the wonderfully complex art and type mix that made him so engaging, but once I started reading, I became a true believer. It's amazing consistency and great reading flow made for an unstoppable and thoroughly great experience. His sense of the real world mixed with surreal elements is as unique as reading Jim Woodring. I'm now re-reading Pure Pajamas and looking for my copy of Shrimpy and Paul just so I can keep capturing the feeling.

Waste of trees, waste of time, waste of money

I'm game for absurd and nonsensical, but not for boring. This is extremely boring. No story, no characters, no nothing. The weak drawings become totally tiresome after a few pages. This is a pathetic attempt at coolness which I didn't even finish. If you want to buy a book that you'll never read again, go ahead.

Tony Couch's "Keys to successful Painting"

This is one of the best books I have ever purchased for helping me understand the aspects of setting up my art work prior to painting. The author, Tony Couch, easily explains the importance of principles and elements, shapes and sizes, lines and direction, texture, color, value and many other informative items to be considered when designing a piece of artwork. It has become my right hand referral book and I could easily read it over and over many times to incorporate the importance of all the design principles. I am so grateful that my art instructor recommended this book which, by the way, I purchased thru Amazon's used book services. I highly recommend that you give the used book area a try for purchases. I decided to order from the "used - like new" section and am extremely happy with the outcome.

Tony Couch`s Keys to Successful Painting is Awesome!

Watercolorist Tony Couch gives out some breakthrough concepts on making your paintings, whatever the medium, look professionally designed and illustrated.His concept is simple. Make every part of your image area more interesting by changing (graduating) the coolness/warmth (temperature) or darkness/lightness (tone) of each area/plane/section. This book`s knowledge has just amped me, an unknown Nebraska artist, up into the top professional landscape painters of America. When the student is ready the teacher shall appear. Bless you Mr. Couch. You rock.

This is a must in your learning library

Once again, Tony has done a great job of explaining and breaking down all the principles that lead to a successful painting His visual example of
each principle tells the reader how to apply keys in nearly every watercolor and oil application. The colorful illustrations provide links to well written
descriptions. I highly recommend this book to all artists from beginner to advanced skills. Well done!
